Not every bite<\/span> of MacOS is all that sweet. Don\u2019t get us wrong\u2014MacOS is a stable operating system that often runs well out of the box, with less tinkering required from Windows and Linux systems, but some of the software Apple includes can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Don\u2019t sit around waiting for Apple to fix the lack of functionality and uninspired design of some of its programs. Take a look instead at these third-party applications to augment and upgrade your MacOS experience.<\/p>\n

Some are for niche uses, but others fix gaps in vanilla MacOS. Many of these apps aren\u2019t free, but most have free trials you can check out while you decide whether to buy. It\u2019s also common for them to sync with companion apps on your iPhone. They might just make your life a little easier.<\/p>\n

Yes, you can use Split View on MacOS to view two applications side by side, but it\u2019s nowhere near as intuitive as it is on Microsoft\u2019s Windows, where you can simply drag a window to a corner and have it snap into place. This app is worth the $3 if you don\u2019t want to mess with resizing window borders constantly. Magnet ($8) is another good option, although now that they\u2019ve raised the price from $3, BetterSnapTool is a better deal.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve ever had to keep wiggling a finger on the trackpad during a movie or YouTube video to stop the screen from going to sleep over and over (or maybe during a particularly long download), you\u2019ll appreciate an app that lets you keep the screen on for certain tasks. It even works with external displays. Sure, you can keep going into your system preferences to change the screensaver and hard disk shutdown settings, but that can get tiresome quickly.<\/p>\n

Twitter can be an overwhelming hive stream of consciousness, and finding the tweets you want can feel like looking for a handful of needles in a big, international haystack. Tweetbot\u2019s sidebar makes using Twitter more manageable by giving you one-click access to your timelines, saved searches, and DMs. You can also select from a list of filters to block out tweets you don\u2019t want to see, such as spoilers, sponsored tweets, and specific keywords, users, and hashtags that you personally customize.<\/p>\n

The default search tool on MacOS isn\u2019t bad, but there\u2019s room for it to go deeper. Alfred is a supercharged alternative that lets you create custom shortcuts to programs and file folders, activate system commands by typing, create automated custom workflows that begin with the push of a button or a typed phrase, and, well, a lot more. It\u2019s free, but you can purchase a version called Powerpack that has more features, such as contacts and app integrations. It costs 29 British pounds (around $38) for a single user license or 49 \u00a0pounds (around $64) for a lifetime of free upgrades to subsequent versions of Alfred.<\/p>\n

Even though I said some nice things about Apple Music in my guide to the best music streaming apps, I still prefer Spotify as an all-around music streaming app. Its interface is arguably the cleanest and most user-friendly in the field, and it has the strongest music discovery algorithms and social components for swapping music with your friends. I take my music too much to heart to put up with advertisements and limited song skips, so I recommend you drop the $10 per month for the Premium tier. Spotify HiFi, with lossless audio quality, has no release date in sight, but unless you\u2019re a diehard audiophile with the ears and listening equipment to detect it, you probably don\u2019t need lossless anyway.<\/p>\n

AdGuard\u2019s stand-alone MacOS app lets you choose from and custom-toggle a huge array of filters to block social media extensions, pop-up ads, URL redirects, and a whole lot more. It works not only on your browser but also on other apps you have installed. There\u2019s a free two-week trial, but you\u2019ll need to pay for a license to use it after the trial expires. For $2.49 a month, you get access to the service on three devices simultaneously.<\/p>\n
