crowbars, inmates were sent to cemeteries in Santa Tecla to destroy the tombs of the town\u2019s powerful Mara Salvatrucha gang.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Also known as MS-13, it\u2019s thought to be one of the world\u2019s most brutal gangs, with a reputation for extreme violence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The country\u2019s head of prisons said the graves were being destroyed because \u201cno terrorist deserves any recognition\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" \u201cwhy we destroy all traces of these groups. In this country, gangs no longer have a place.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The destruction of the tombs in the suburb of the capital, San Salvador, and nearby Col\u00f3n is being carried out at a time of year when families visit their loved ones\u2019 graves for Day of the Dead (D\u00eda de Muertos).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The town\u2019s mayor said inmates had destroyed nearly 80 tombstones in the cemetery and also got rid of gang-related graffiti.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">One man who was taking flowers to a relative\u2019s grave on Wednesday said that while it used to be \u201cnormal to see gang members inside the cemetery, today there\u2019s no danger\u201d. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In 2012, El Salvador had the highest murder rate in the world and since then authorities have been cracking down on gangs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">A state of emergency has been enforced since March, when gang violence left 62 people dead in one day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Under the measures, certain constitutional rights such as the right to assembly have been curtailed and the security forces have been given more leeway to carry out arrests.
