By Bethonie Butler<\/strong><\/p>\n When spooky season and the cool autumn weather converge, there\u2019s nothing we love more than cozying up to a scary (and\/or scary good) TV show or movie. We\u2019ve rounded up some of the most frightening fare to help you get into the spirit as Halloween approaches.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Midnight Club\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n Mike Flanagan, who has helmed various hauntings (\u201cHill House\u201d, \u201cBly Manor\u201d), takes us into Brightcliffe, a mysterious hospice for terminally ill teenagers in this story based on Christopher Pike\u2019s novel of the same name. <\/p>\n The 10-episode series follows Ilonka (Iman Benson), whose plans to attend Stanford University are put on hold by a cancer diagnosis. Beware the jump scares, but like most of Flanagan\u2019s work, the underlying themes here are deeper than things that go bump in the night. <\/p>\n At heart, \u201cThe Midnight Club\u201d is about taking control of your life as it slips away and having the strength to confront death head-on. <\/p>\n \u201cGuillermo del Toro\u2019s Cabinet of Curiosities\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The horror auteur behind \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d and the upcoming \u201cPinocchio\u201d curates this creepy anthology \u2013 think \u201cBlack Mirror\u201d meets Hitchcock \u2013 which features stories written by del Toro and others, including Jennifer Kent (\u201cThe Babadook\u201d), David Prior (\u201cThe Empty Man\u201d) and Ana Lily Amirpour (\u201cA Girl Walks Home Alone at Night\u201d). <\/p>\n The first instalment stars Tim Blake Nelson (\u201cWatchmen\u201d) as a white supremacist who makes a living buying storage units relinquished by dead people and encounters more than he bargained for in one haul. <\/p>\n Another features Kate Micucci (\u201cThe Big Bang Theory\u201d) as a lonely taxidermy enthusiast who undergoes an unsettling transformation after using an informercial-touted face cream. <\/p>\n \u201cInterview with the Vampire\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n AMC\u2019s serial adaptation of Anne Rice\u2019s 1976 gothic novel leans fully into the gay subtext that the popular 1994 movie starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise largely sidestepped.<\/p>\n In this retelling, Louis (Jacob Anderson) is a wealthy black man living in 1900s New Orleans, making his immortal companionship with Lestat (Sam Reid), his lover\/vampire mentor and co-parent to teenage Claudia (Bailey Bass, in the role originated by Kristen Dunst), all the more complicated. <\/p>\n \u201cGhosts\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n If you haven\u2019t yet tucked into this network gem about a married couple who inherits a very haunted country house \u2013 and decides to keep living there because New York real estate is no joke \u2013 we highly recommend introducing yourself to Sam and Jay Arondekar (Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar). <\/p>\n Their lively band of ghost roomies, who are visible only to Sam following a near-death experience, include an affable Scout leader who took an arrow to the neck, a flower child who got mauled by a bear and a prohibition-era jazz singer who met her moonshine match (read: death by poison). <\/p>\n \u201cThe Patient\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Serial killer Sam (Domhnall Gleeson) kidnaps his therapist, Alan (Steve Carell), in this unsettling, critically acclaimed drama that is just as compelling in its exploration of a wounded man\u2019s darkest impulses as it is in dealing with the grief Carell\u2019s character navigates following the death of his wife and estrangement from his son. <\/p>\n Former \u201cWashington Post\u201d TV critic Inkoo Kang, who praised the series\u2019s \u201ctruly novel premise\u201d and \u201cemotional naturalism\u201d, noted that the drama is unique in how it \u201cmakes us care far more about why Sam kills rather than how he does it\u201d. <\/p>\n \u201cSissy\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Aisha Dee (\u201cThe Bold Type\u201d) plays Cecilia, a social media influencer who finds herself stuck in a remote cabin for a bachelorette party (hen\u2019s weekend, in Aussie parlance) with her former BFF Emma (co-director Hannah Barlow) and Alex (Emily De Margheriti), the bully who came between them as teenagers. <\/p>\n As Cecilia plots her revenge, the carefully curated life she\u2019s created online unspools into bloody and darkly comedic chaos. Honestly, we were scared at \u201cbachelorette\u201d. <\/p>\n \u201cCandyman\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The movie that made us never want to stand in front of a mirror with the lights off gets an update from director Nia DaCosta and producer Jordan Peele, who knows a thing or two about combining social commentary and the horror genre. <\/p>\n Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays Anthony McCoy, a visual artist who becomes obsessed with the urban legend of Candyman, who looms large in gentrifying Chicago. <\/p>\n \u201cBarbarian\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Imagine showing up at your Airbnb in the middle of the night only to discover the rental home is already inhabited by a supposedly double-booked guest and other terrors. <\/p>\n That\u2019s the nightmare greeting that Tess (Georgina Campbell) faces in Zach Cregger\u2019s bloody thriller, which \u201cVariety\u201d recently dubbed the second-best horror film of the year. Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long also star. <\/p>\n \u201cHocus Pocus 2\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n If you need a family-friendly viewing option (or a palate cleanser), may we suggest this sequel to the 1993 Halloween classic? Come for the nostalgia, stay for the brilliantly cast backstory on the Sanderson sisters. <\/p>\n Don\u2019t worry: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprise their roles as the adult trio, and there are still musical numbers and much ado about eating children\u2019s souls. <\/p>\n \u201cWendell & Wild\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n A teenager, voiced by \u201cThis Is Us\u201d star Lyric Ross, must confront her (literal) demons \u2013 voiced by Peele and Keegan-Michael Key \u2013 in this stop-motion treat co-written by Peele and Henry Selick (director of \u201cCoraline\u201d and \u201cThe Nightmare Before Christmas\u201d). <\/p>\n Angela Bassett and Ving Rhames also lend their voices to the animated horror-com that explores the trauma that comes from the death of a parent.<\/p>\n \u201cAtlanta: Crank Dat Killer\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The entire final season of \u201cAtlanta\u201d deserves your attention, but if you only have time for one episode, make it the one that imagines a serial killer inspired by rapper Soulja Boy, best known for his meme-worthy proclamations and inescapable 2007 hit single \u201cCrank That\u201d.<\/p>\n And if you haven\u2019t yet seen Season 2\u2019s \u201cTeddy Perkins\u201d, about a mysterious man with childhood trauma and a skin condition that renders his face a powdery white, crank dat one, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Bethonie Butler When spooky season and the cool autumn weather converge, there\u2019s nothing we love more than cozying up to a scary (and\/or scary good) TV show or movie.
