Oct. 30 (UPI) \u2014<\/span> One day after her husband Paul was violently attacked in California, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said their children and grandchildren \u201care heartbroken and traumatized.\u201d<\/p>\n The comments on Saturday night were the first since since her 82-year-old husband was attacked with a hammer at their home in the Pacific Heights section of San Francisco. Pelosi was in Washington. D.C., at the time.\n<\/p>\n \u201cYesterday morning, a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul,\u201d Pelosi wrote in a letter to all House of Representatives members. \u201cOur children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop.\u201d<\/p>\n David DePape, 42, faces charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary and other felonies in relation to the attack, which happened after 2 a.m. on Friday. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, according to San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.\n<\/p>\n \u201cWe are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving,\u201d Pelosi wrote.\n<\/p>\n Paul Pelosi was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for surgery to \u201crepair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,\u201d Drew Hammill, the speaker\u2019s spokesman, said. \u201cHis doctors expect a full recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPlease know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery,\u201d Pelosi wrote. \u201cHis condition continues to improve.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Sgt. William Scott said officers observed Depape and Pelosi holding onto a hammer when they arrived on the scene. Depape then pulled the hammer away from Paul Pelosi and began assaulting him with it until officers were able to arrest him.<\/p>\n \u201cThe suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n Capitol Police are responsible for Nancy Pelosi\u2019s security and the security of other members of Congress, but lack the resources to protect lawmakers\u2019 families around the clock.\n<\/p>\n On Saturday, President Joe Biden said in Delaware: \u201cAll the malarkey that\u2019s being put out there \u2013 you can\u2019t just apologize. It affects people\u2019s mentality. It affects how people think. Particularly, people who are not as stable as other people.\u201d\n<\/p>\n He was referring to right-wing conspiracies and violence.<\/p>\n \u201cThe talk has to stop,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the problem. That\u2019s the problem. You can\u2019t just say, feel badly about the violence, we condemn it. Condemn what produces the violence.
