{"id":1237368,"date":"2022-10-28T15:27:22","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T15:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/28\/develop-power-sector-to-rake-in-needed-foreign-exchange-mahama-tells-govt\/"},"modified":"2022-10-28T15:27:22","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T15:27:22","slug":"develop-power-sector-to-rake-in-needed-foreign-exchange-mahama-tells-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/28\/develop-power-sector-to-rake-in-needed-foreign-exchange-mahama-tells-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"Develop power sector to rake in needed foreign exchange &#8211; Mahama tells govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"457\"  alt=\"\" title=\"Electricity-sector-in-Ghana\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1666970842_161_Electricity-sector-in-Ghana-696x457.jpg\" data- class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image lazyload\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"457\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1666970842_161_Electricity-sector-in-Ghana-696x457.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Electricity-sector-in-Ghana\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><strong>Former President John Dramani Mahama has asked the government to develop the power sector of the economy in order to generate more foreign exchange earnings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This suggestion forms part of Mr Mahama\u2019s ideas to the government in tackling the economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering an address on the economy at the University of Professional Studies Accra, (UPSA) on Thursday October 28, Mr Mahama said the construction of the Atuabo Gas processing led to a 61% reduction in the importation of Light Crude Oil resulting in annual savings of about $300 million per annum.<\/p>\n<p>The plant also supplies about 50% of the nation\u2019s LPG needs, reducing the need for forex to import LPG.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to President Atta Mills of blessed memory- we would have been in a much worse place at this time if this plant had not been built,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added \u201cWe must expand the capacity of the Ghana National Gas Company to extend its distribution pipelines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a matter of urgency, there is the need to revamp the Tema Oil Refinery and ensure that the refinery processes domestic crude oil, as was started under our administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will not only help prevent fuel shortages but also reduce the demand for forex cover to import finished products significantly. Currently, about $400 million is required every month to import finished petroleum products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added \u201cAnother sector we can develop to rake in much needed foreign exchange is the power sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the completion of the 330KV Kumasi- Bolgatanga line, which began in March 2016 under my administration, the country is poised to export additional power to the Sahelian Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would encourage the Government to work urgently to deploy the Ameri and other plants to enable the nation to export more power for much needed foreign exchange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Laud Nartey|3news.com|Ghana<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President John Dramani Mahama has asked the government to develop the power sector of the economy in order to generate more foreign exchange earnings.
