class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Rishi Sunak played what Conservatives see as their greatest hits: Brexit, levelling up and talk of winning elections, and his backbenchers lapped it class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The new prime minister sounded confident, but his hand and leg could be seen twitching occasionally from the press gallery above the main chamber, offering the appointment of Suella Braverman as home secretary. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Sunak acknowledged that the woman he has sent to run the Home Office had made an \u201cerror of judgement\u201d in that very same job last week, but he was \u201cdelighted to welcome her back\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Today at Rishi Sunak\u2019s first PMQs, it felt like the last remaining remnants of her ideas were lobbed in the skip.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">So her flirtation with fracking in England is junked, with the PM restoring a 2019 \u201cmoratorium\u201d on drilling for shale gas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It was also strongly hinted that the government will raise those benefits that don\u2019t automatically go up with prices in line with the rate of inflation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Liz Truss was tempted to put them up in line with average earnings instead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">So what about pensions? Will they go up in line with spiralling prices too? <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The prime minister\u2019s official spokesman was less categorical about that, but the importance of the manifesto was repeatedly referenced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The Conservatives\u2019 2019 manifesto contained a promise to raise the state pension by the highest of 2.5%, average earnings, or inflation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">On immigration, again Mr Sunak\u2019s team referred back to the manifesto \u2013 with its commitment to falling net migration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">\u201cBut the exact mix will be set out in due course,\u201d his spokesman said, adding that this would be set to reflect the \u201cskills and talents\u201d the economy required.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"What-did-Tory-MPs-think\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">What did Tory MPs think?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Several Tory MPs said the mood after PMQs was \u201cbuoyant\u201d in the Commons tea rooms.
