{"id":1235114,"date":"2022-10-26T13:34:51","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T13:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/26\/transport-fares-to-go-up-by-19-per-cent-from-saturday\/"},"modified":"2022-10-26T13:34:51","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T13:34:51","slug":"transport-fares-to-go-up-by-19-per-cent-from-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/26\/transport-fares-to-go-up-by-19-per-cent-from-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"Transport fares to go up by 19 per cent from Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Accra, Oct. 26, GNA \u2013 The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is expected to announce a 19 per cent increment in transport fares effective Saturday, October 29, 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rate was agreed at a meeting between transport operators and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Richard Yaw Amankwah, Deputy General Secretary in Charge of Operations, GPRTU, told the Ghana News Agency that the new fares would be announced either today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are doing our calculations and once we are done, we will officially announce the new fares today or tomorrow\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile some commercial drivers are already implementing a 20 per cent increment in fares ahead of the GPRTU\u2019s official announcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some passengers, who said they initially paid GHS4.50 as transport fares were charged GHS5.50, representing about 22 per cent increment on Wednesday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Amankwah said the GPRTU had taken note of the situation, saying: \u201cit is because the new fares is long overdue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the mechanisms to put in place to stop that.
