In 1911, one of France\u2019s most famous artist Henri Matisse sat down to paint his studio.<\/p>\n
The resulting piece, \u2018The Red Studio\u2019, depicts Matisse\u2019s workshop filled with his paintings, sculptures and decorative objects.<\/p>\n
It is now considered a \u201clandmark\u201d in European Modernist painting. It is one of the most prized works at New York\u2019s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).<\/p>\n
However, the works depicted in the painting have since been sold and scattered around the world, some in private collections.<\/p>\n
The locations of a couple of the lesser-known works were only recently discovered.<\/p>\n
Denmark\u2019s national gallery, the Statens Museum for Kunst, has since collaborated with MOMA to reunite the works for the first time.<\/p>\n
The Danish museum owns 25 of Matisse\u2019s paintings and some of his sculptures. Its collection is one of the most important outside of France.<\/p>\n
\u201cMatisse is one of the greats, and this picture is one of his greatest paintings. And it has so much to do with the fact that he painted his studio, the pictures and the sculptures he had made at that moment,\u201d said Ann Temkin, chief curator of painting and sculpture of MoMA.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd in a way, you could say it\u2019s a self-portrait because for an artist, what they make is who they are.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ll never see these together again, I don\u2019t think that there will be a chance. I can\u2019t imagine in the future where this would happen,\u201d Temkin added.<\/p>\n
The Red Studio exhibit runs until February 26th.<\/p>\n
