As Truss\u2019 future in 10 Downing Street was looking in doubt,\u00a0British tabloid the Daily Star launched the bizarre challenge to see who would last longer.<\/p>\n
The Economist sparked the idea in an article that bluntly predicted her career as PM would have the\u00a0\u201cshelf-life of a lettuce\u201d.<\/p>\n
The tabloid then began the joke, placing a lettuce next to a framed photo of Truss.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes it\u2019s the simplest ideas that are the best,\u201d\u00a0associate editor Andy Gilpin told Euronews. \u201cWe sent a guy down to Tesco, armed him with 60p.<\/p>\n
\u201cTabloid newspapers are known for their puns, and I think we have exhausted every single lettuce pun over the past 7 days. There\u2019s nothing left in our big book of puns.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Daily Star then live-streamed as the lettuce withered away, as did the political support for Truss.<\/p>\n
This attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers to the tabloid\u2019s YouTube page.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were certainly not prepared for this,\u201d said Gilpin.\u00a0\u201cAll of a sudden, we had 500 people on the stream and they were staying there. People were chatting and saying good night to each other. It was like a little community watching this lettuce.\u201d<\/p>\n
When Truss resigned on Thursday, the Daily Star put out disco lights and a small crown proclaiming \u201cLettuce Liz\u201d as the winner of the competition.<\/p>\n
As the politician gave in her resignation, the live stream soared to more than 20,000.<\/p>\n
So, what does the future hold for Lettuce Liz?<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are high-level talks about the future of this lettuce,\u201d said\u00a0Gilpin. \u201cWho knows? Maybe it\u2019s going to run for election.\u201d<\/p>\n
