San Francisco \u2013 After reports emerged that Elon Musk is planning \u201cto cut 75% of Twitter staff if he takes over\u201d, employees at the microblogging platform have warned the tech billionaire that mass lay-offs would be \u201creckless\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to a report by \u201cTIME\u201d, as the deadline for Musk to finalise his $44-billion acquisition of Twitter approaches, an unidentified number of company employees wrote an open letter objecting to his proposal to fire up to 75% of the company\u2019s workforce.<\/p>\n
\u201cElon Musk\u2019s plan to lay off 75% of Twitter workers will hurt Twitter\u2019s ability to serve the public conversation,\u201d the letter reads.<\/p>\n
\u201cA threat of this magnitude is reckless, undermines our users\u2019 and customers\u2019 trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation. We cannot do our work in an environment of constant harassment and threats,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
The letter also includes a list of demands for the \u201ccurrent and future leadership\u201d of the company.<\/p>\n
In addition to \u201cfair severance policies for all workers\u201d, the letter writers want Musk to keep existing employee benefits in place, including remote work.<\/p>\n
The letter also suggests a potential ideological gap between some Twitter employees and Musk, who has expressed his preference for less moderation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe demand that leadership does not discriminate against workers on the basis of their race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or political beliefs,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n
Job cuts are expected in the coming months no matter who owns the company, according to a recent report by \u201cThe Washington Post\u201d, which cited interviews and documents.<\/p>\n
The report mentioned that the lay-offs will undoubtedly impact Twitter\u2019s daily operations, including its ability to moderate harmful content and combat security issues.<\/p>\n
