According to new research, having children at an early or late age may make them more likely to have bipolar disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n

The disorder impairs a person’s capacity to perform daily tasks and is characterized by abrupt changes in mood, energy, and activity levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

These most recent findings, which were published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology, open the door for further investigation into the risk factors contributing to its high heritability.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to determine whether there was a correlation between parental age and the risk of bipolar disorder in children, a team of researchers from Spain, Italy, Australia, and the Netherlands examined studies involving a total of more than 13 million participants, of whom over 217,000 had the condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

When compared to parents between the ages of 25 and 29, they discovered a “U-shaped” curve, indicating greater risks for both younger and older parents.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, she stressed, prospective parents who fall within these age ranges shouldn’t be concerned despite the elevated risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can say that both earlier and older parental age is associated with an increased risk of bipolar disorder,\u201d study lead Giovanna Fico told Euronews Next.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, she stressed, prospective parents who fall within these age ranges shouldn’t be concerned despite the elevated risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think they should be very worried. The effect is moderate. But there is an effect\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
