{"id":1231110,"date":"2022-10-21T18:34:47","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T18:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/21\/govt-imf-sure-of-staff-level-agreement-by-december-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-10-21T18:34:47","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T18:34:47","slug":"govt-imf-sure-of-staff-level-agreement-by-december-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/21\/govt-imf-sure-of-staff-level-agreement-by-december-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt, IMF sure of staff-level agreement by December 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1666377287_364_IMF_team.jpg\" alt=\"Govt, IMF sure of staff-level agreement by December 2022\" class=\" bd-imagestyles-16\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\nThis was when the new IMF Mission Chief for Ghana, St\u00e9phane Roudet, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Finance after his appointment as the new IMF Mission Chief for Ghana, effective September 1, 2022 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>The government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have agreed to work expeditiously towards securing a staff-level agreement on the country\u2019s request for an IMF-assisted programme by the end of this year.<\/h2>\n<p>The Ministry of Finance announced this in a statement issued Friday, October 21, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It also pledged the government&#8217;s commitment to work with a \u201cfierce sense of urgency\u201d to help stabilise the economy.<\/p>\n<p>The statement said the two sides have also agreed that the next IMF team would return to the country next week as part of efforts to speed up the discussions towards reaching staff level agreement by December.<\/p>\n<p>The team that is expected in the country next week would be the third in a row after the country requested the IMF for a fund-assisted programme to help stabilise the economy in July.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual meetings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Finance Ministry statement followed the conclusion of the IMF\/World Bank annual meetings in Washington D.C., where the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, participated in.<\/p>\n<p>The statement from the Public Affairs Department of the ministry said the Ghana delegation also continued discussions with the IMF team on the country\u2019s request for an fund-assisted programme<\/p>\n<p>It said earlier discussions on an IMF deal achieved key milestones, with a clear path towards the final details of a programme agreed upon by both parties.<\/p>\n<p>It said the goal now was for the two parties to reach a Staff-Level Agreement by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF said in an earlier statement that the two sides had made \u201cgood progress\u201d on the discussions and that specific policies needed to restore stability had been identified.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Countries\u2019 requests for IMF-assisted programmes are normally taken through two levels.<\/p>\n<p>At the first level, the IMF team, comprising expert staff, visit the country and hold discussions with the authorities to review and gather data, interrogate recommended reforms, policies and programmes and present a report to the IMF\u2019s Executive Board for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>At the Executive Board level, the report is thoroughly reviewed and a decision taken on it.
