Wellington, New Zealand \u2013 Saving an endangered bird and commuting via helicopter in New Zealand may sound like a dream gig, but so far, a job to protect a rare flightless bird is not taking off among applicants.<\/p>\n
The Department of Conservation in the tiny town of Haast \u2013 perched on the western edge of Mount Aspiring National Park \u2013 has received just three applications so far for the role, said operations manager Wayne Costello.<\/p>\n
While the towering mountains that flank Haast and its surrounding region are \u201coutstandingly beautiful\u201d, Costello conceded the job has its drawbacks.<\/p>\n
The nearest supermarket is a two-hour drive away, while the closest hospital is four hours by car.<\/p>\n

If the rugged terrain and isolation don\u2019t ruffle one\u2019s feathers, \u201cthe west coast is an outdoor enthusiasts\u2019 dream world\u201d, Costello said.<\/p>\n
As for the job, the biodiversity supervisor position involves patrolling spectacular landscapes and caring for kiwi \u2013 a flightless bird native to New Zealand \u2013 penguins and lizards.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe key focus for this particular job is to lead a team which is saving New Zealand\u2019s rarest kiwi species \u2013 the Haast tokoeka,\u201d Costello said.<\/p>\n
The shy \u201chighly-strung\u201d kiwi has a population of about 500, and they are not easy to track down, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the places you would need to get to would be by jet boat, or quite often by helicopter as it\u2019s quite remote, challenging country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the lack of interest, Costello has chosen not to brood on it, opting instead to remain hopeful as he extended the application period by an extra three weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, you\u2019re just looking for that one special person,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n
