and subsequent trips to rehab, which all started after he moved to Los Angeles in his 20s.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div \u201ccraving normality\u201d reminiscent of his upbringing, which he found at a dive bar called Barney\u2019s Beanery.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">While he originally wasn\u2019t much of a drinker, he ended up spending \u201cmore hours [and] more nights\u201d than he cares to remember drinking at Barney\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"subbuzz__media\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz     <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">\u201cI went from being not particularly interested to regularly having a few pints a day before the sun had even gone down, and a shot of whiskey to go with class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">When his drinking began to affect his work, his team set up an intervention and demanded he go to rehab or they would drop him as a client.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"subbuzz__media\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-instagram&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"embed-instagram\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">Tom ended up checking into a $ 40,000-a-month rehab facility in Malibu \u2014 but he was there for less than 24 hours. He says he walked straight out of the facility and back towards the bar in LA.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-image&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"subbuzz-image\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">\u201cI didn\u2019t believe that my substance use warranted the intervention, but I\u2019m glad it happened because it briefly took me away from the world that was making me unhappy, and allowed me to get some clarity,\u201d Tom wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"subbuzz__media\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-instagram&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"embed-instagram\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">From there, he decided to break up with his longtime girlfriend and eventually checked himself into a facility he described as \u201ca sanctuary for struggling young people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-image&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"subbuzz-image\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">Unfortunately, Tom was kicked out of the program after just three weeks when he was caught with a woman in her bedroom \u2014 but it was enough time for the experience to be \u201clife-changing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"subbuzz__media\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-instagram&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"embed-instagram\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">Tom adopted a dog, started volunteering, and made a move to Venice Beach to give himself a fresh start and says that for years, his \u201clife was better than ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-image&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"subbuzz-image\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">Unfortunately, \u201cthe numbness returned with no particular trigger\u201d a few years later and he made the decision to return to rehab.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"subbuzz__media\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz subbuzz-instagram&#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  &#10;  \" data-module=\"embed-instagram\">\n<h2 class=\"subbuzz__header subbuzz__header--standard subbuzz__title \">\n<\/h2>\n<p>      <span class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">\u201cI can honestly say it was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. But the very fact that I was able to admit to myself that I needed some help \u2014 and I was going to do something about it \u2014 was an important moment,\u201d he shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"js-subbuzz-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"subbuzz buzz-width--standard__subbuzz buzz-type--list__subbuzz class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">Tom now wants others to know they are \u201cnot alone\u201d if they have similar feelings and there should be \u201cno shame in that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"js-subbuzz__title-text\">\u201cJust as we all experience physical ill-health at some stage in our lives, so we all experience mental ill-health too,\u201d he wrote, adding that he hopes
