After weeks of spewing\u00a0antisemitic and controversial remarks,\u00a0Kanye West has found himself at the centre of a $250-million lawsuit filed by the family of police brutality victim George Floyd.<\/p>\n
According to a\u00a0news release<\/a>\u00a0obtained by The Times on Tuesday, Roxie Washington, the mother of Floyd\u2019s daughter, will sue Kanye West (legal name Ye) for \u201charassment, misappropriation, defamation\u201d and \u201cinfliction of emotional distress.\u201d\u00a0Click 2 Houston\u00a0first reported the news.<\/p>\n The lawsuit comes just days after the \u201cDonda\u201d rapper made disparaging comments about the 2020 death of Floyd when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground for nearly 9\u00bd minutes.<\/p>\n Floyd\u2019s murder sparked the Black Lives Matter movement and global cries against police brutality.<\/p>\n Chauvin, who is white, kneeled on Floyd\u2019s neck as Floyd repeatedly said he couldn\u2019t breathe. In April 2021, Chauvin\u00a0was convicted of murdering Floyd. Over the weekend, West questioned the cause of Floyd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n \u201cI watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out,\u201d\u00a0West said during the weekend episode<\/a>, which \u201cDrink Champs\u201d has since\u00a0removed from its platforms.\u00a0\u201cThey hit him with fentanyl. If you look, the guy\u2019s knee wasn\u2019t even on his neck like that.\u201d<\/p>\n West\u2019s comments came after he attended\u00a0the premiere\u00a0of Owens\u2019 Daily Wire documentary, \u201cThe Greatest Lie Ever Sold: George Floyd and the Rise of BLM.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cKanye West stated malicious falsehoods about George Floyd to profit from Mr. Floyd\u2019s horrendous death and his family\u2019s trauma,\u201d the news release alleged.<\/p>\n Additionally, the attorneys for Floyd\u2019s loved ones claimed that \u201cFloyd\u2019s daughter is being retraumatized by Kanye West\u2019s comments and he\u2019s creating an unsafe and unhealthy environment for her.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cKanye\u2019s comments are a repugnant attempt to discount George Floyd\u2019s life and to profit from his inhumane death. We will hold Mr. West accountable for his flagrant remarks against Mr. Floyd\u2019s legacy,\u201d said attorney Pat D. Dixon in a statement. The Witherspoon Law Group and Dixon & Dixon Attorneys at Law will represent Floyd\u2019s loved ones.<\/p>\n Just days before the lawsuit was filed Tuesday, attorney Lee Merritt, who previously represented Floyd\u2019s family,\u00a0tweeted on Sunday<\/a>\u00a0that a legal response to West\u2019s comments was imminent.<\/p>\n While one cannot defame the dead, the family of #GeorgeFloyd<\/a> is considering suit for Kanye\u2019s false statements about the manner of his death.<\/p>\n Claiming Floyd died from fentanyl not the brutality established criminally and civilly undermines & diminishes the Floyd family\u2019s fight.<\/p>\n\n
