China has opened dozens of \u201coverseas police service stations\u201d around the globe, including Nigeria, to observe its nationals living abroad.<\/p>\n
This is contained in a report titled \u201c110 Overseas: Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild,\u201d which covers China\u2019s efforts to fight \u201cfraud\u201d committed by its citizens living in other countries.<\/p>\n
These police stations have been established, according to the research, in 22 different nations.<\/p>\n
London, Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest, Athens, Paris, Madrid, and Frankfurt are among the locations in Europe.<\/p>\n
Four of the stations are also located in North America, with three in Toronto and one in New York City. There are 54 such stations altogether spread throughout 30 different nations.<\/p>\n
According to reports, Benin City, Edo State is home to the Fuzhou-Run overseas police \u201cService Station\u201d in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The report notes that China has opened these police stations in an attempt to \u201ccombat the growing issue of fraud and telecommunication fraud by Chinese nationals living abroad,\u201d and its operations have resulted in 230,000 Chinese nationals being \u201cpersuaded to return\u201d to China \u201cvoluntarily\u201d in the last year to face criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n
The report also outlines the potential human rights abuses associated with the stations, including using harassment and intimidation methods, such as threatening the family members of the overseas citizens.<\/p>\n
Human rights groups have raised concerns over China\u2019s actions. Safeguard Defenders Campaign Director Laura Harth\u00a0said on Monday\u00a0that the number of secret police stations set up around the world by the Chinese government had been \u201cgrowing\u201d after 54 stations were initially uncovered in 30 countries.<\/p>\n
The investigation by Safeguard Defenders says that while the overseas police service centres may help Chinese diaspora and tourists with everyday problems, they are part of a complex global web of surveillance and control, allowing the Communist Party to reach far beyond China\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs these operations continue to develop, and new mechanisms are set up, it is evident that countries governed by the standards set by universal human rights and the rule of law urgently need to investigate these practices to identify the (local) actors at work, mitigate the risks and effectively protect the growing number of those targeted,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
