{"id":1227727,"date":"2022-10-18T14:09:07","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T14:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/18\/common-ecowas-currency-wont-solve-forex-challenges\/"},"modified":"2022-10-18T14:09:07","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T14:09:07","slug":"common-ecowas-currency-wont-solve-forex-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/18\/common-ecowas-currency-wont-solve-forex-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Common ECOWAS currency won&#8217;t solve forex challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An economist and research lead at GC Capital Limited, Courage Boti, says the introduction of a common African currency in the sub-region would not mitigate Ghana\u2019s forex challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The economist argued that there was not enough trade going on between the ECOWAS countries.<\/p>\n<p>This call comes on the back of Bloomberg rating of the Ghanaian cedi as the worst-performing currency across the globe after considering a basket of 148 currencies around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The cedi is selling at a little over GHS11 to the dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Citi Breakfast Show, Courage Boti says government must address the basic issues causing the depreciation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a problem beyond the common currency. It is about what percent of trade happens between us,\u201d Br. Boti said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what if we have Eco, but I don\u2019t buy goods from C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire or Nigeria or a percentage of my trade between C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Nigeria and the surrounding countries are very insignificant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The economist also noted that West African countries would have to meet some common convergence criteria like acceptable currency stability and debt to GDP rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you do not have a kind of stability and convergence, when you introduce even the eco, it will still be very volatile and will not serve the purpose that it is intended to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An economist and research lead at GC Capital Limited, Courage Boti, says the introduction of a common African currency in the sub-region would not mitigate Ghana\u2019s forex challenges.
