{"id":1223335,"date":"2022-10-13T10:00:56","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T10:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/13\/india-production-halted-after-child-fatalities\/"},"modified":"2022-10-13T10:00:56","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T10:00:56","slug":"india-production-halted-after-child-fatalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/13\/india-production-halted-after-child-fatalities\/","title":{"rendered":"India production halted after child fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div wp_automatic_readability=\"64\">\n<p><figure><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A member of the Gambian Red Cross looks through sacks of cough syrups that have been collected\/ PC: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Indian health officials have ordered a maker of cough syrups to halt production after they were linked to the deaths of children in The Gambia.<\/p>\n<p>Maiden Pharmaceuticals broke rules \u201cacross its manufacturing and testing activities,\u201d Indian regulators found.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over four of Maiden\u2019s cough syrups linked to the deaths of almost 70 children.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations are currently under way in India and The Gambia.<\/p>\n<p>Regulators said that they had suspended all manufacturing activities at the New Delhi-based firm after finding it had broken a number of safety rules.<\/p>\n<p>This was \u201cin view of the seriousness of the contraventions observed during the investigation and its potential risk to the quality, safety and efficacy of the drug being produced,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>Maiden did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the company said it was \u201cshocked to hear media reports regarding the deaths and deeply saddened by this incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This came after\u00a0the WHO issued a global alert\u00a0over four of Maiden\u2019s cough syrups, warning that they could be linked to acute kidney injuries and the children\u2019s deaths in July, August and September.<\/p>\n<p>The global health organisation also warned the products \u201cmay have been distributed, through informal markets, to other countries and regions\u201d besides The Gambia.<\/p>\n<p>The medicines were identified as Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup.<\/p>\n<p>Police in The Gambia are investigating the deaths of the children, as Gambians demand justice.<\/p>\n<p>The President of The Gambia Adama Barrow said authorities would \u201cleave no stone unturned\u201d in their investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In a preliminary report released on Tuesday, police in The Gambia said the cough syrups were imported to the West African country by a US-based company.<\/p>\n<p>The report also said that the majority of the 50,000 bottles of the contaminated syrups that were imported into the country had now been seized.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"7AoKcTv5ZoI\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Akanteng residents appeal for completion of \u20181 million Dollar\u2019 Per Constituency facility (12-10-22)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7AoKcTv5ZoI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A member of the Gambian Red Cross looks through sacks of cough syrups that have been collected\/ PC: Getty Images Indian health officials have ordered a maker of cough syrups to halt production after they were linked to the deaths of children in The Gambia.
