Maseru\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0A new coalition administration has been established in Maseru-Lesotho, a tiny mountain kingdom in southern Africa. This announcement was made a few days following the nation\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n
The populist Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) party, led by diamond magnate Sam Matekane, won the most seats in last week\u2019s election, but fell\u00a0short of an overall majority, the election commission said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The party emerged as the single biggest party\u00a0with 56 seats,\u00a0but needed to court other\u00a0groups to\u00a0control\u00a0the country\u2019s 120-member parliament. A coalition government\u00a0paves the way for\u00a0the first\u00a0change in government\u00a0there in more than five years.<\/p>\n
Lesotho\u00a0has been marred by years of political instability under the current governing party, the All Basotho Convention (ABC), which has run the country of 2.14 million people since\u00a02017.<\/p>\n
Divisions\u00a0within the party have given it two prime ministers over\u00a0that time.\u00a0RFP has promised to do away with rampant corruption and nepotism and focus on economic growth by levelling the\u00a0playing field for\u00a0businesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cMatekane\u2019s victory is a clear picture that Basotho\u00a0(the people of\u00a0Lesotho)\u00a0are tired of people who do not deliver when in power,\u201d political analyst Lefu Thaela said as the votes were being counted on Sunday night with the RFP taking a strong lead.<\/p>\n
The election went ahead despite a deadlock in parliament on a whole gamut of major constitutional reforms that were meant to be enacted ahead of the vote in order to bring order to the country\u2019s fractious politics.<\/p>\n
In\u00a0Lesotho\u2019s national\u00a0assembly,\u00a080 seats\u00a0are won through \u201cfirst-past-the-post\u201d voting\u00a0and the rest\u00a0allocated using proportional representation, under which parties get seats based on their total national votes.<\/p>\n
