Before the introduction of license into the teaching profession in Ghana, various professional bodies like drivers, GMA, GRNA, GBA to mention but a few had operating license.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A lot of us were happy with this introduction of license into our profession because we thought we were now going to be true professionals. Little\u00a0did we know that people were going to take advantage\u00a0\u00a0and exploit us in the cause of renewal of this license. <\/p>\n
If we are licensed professionals,what it means is that periodically,\u00a0we have to renew the license.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Negative Side<\/strong> <\/p>\n What is the lay down procedure for the renewal of the\u00a0teachers license within a specified period of about 3 to 4 years.<\/p>\n We are told to attend CPD workshops\u00a0to build 72 – 100 points within the three\u00a0or four years interval before the license is renewed.\u00a0<\/p>\n On two occasions teachers in the New Juaben North Municipality\u00a0converged at the assembly hall of Oyoko Methodist\u00a0SHS at each occasion\u00a0they were about 350 in number to attend\u00a0the CPD workshop\u00a0to build\u00a0points.<\/p>\n On one occasion they paid 75gh to build 8 points and another occasions\u00a0they paid 55gh to build\u00a02 points.<\/p>\n Teachers in the Abuakwa\u00a0North District are currently paying 75gh to build\u00a04 points.<\/p>\n Now, if a teacher is to build 100 points and by building 4 points from each CPD workshop, what it means is that the teacher must attend 4 times 25 CPD workshops to build the 100points.<\/p>\n And this is where the teacher is able to get all the 4 points for each\u00a0attendance\u00a0and this means the teacher\u00a0must pay 75×25 before his license is renewed.\u00a0 teacher is not able to build 4 points from each attendance,\u00a0then your guess should be as good as mine.<\/p>\n Besides the monetary aspect of this CPD thing, the way the workshops\u00a0are organized leaves much to be desired. We have categories of teachers such as: Basic School Teachers, Second Cycle Teachers and Special School Teachers<\/p>\n What has the teacher who has a certificate in early childhood\u00a0got in common with a teacher with a certificate in basic education\u00a0or what does a teacher who has a certificate of B Ed science\u00a0with chemistry. or physics or biology\u00a0as\u00a0a major has in common with a Ghanaian language\u00a0teacher or what has PE teacher has in common with\u00a0economics teacher.<\/p>\n Questions<\/strong> <\/p>\n Before the introduction of the license how many times did the employer (GES) organizing refresher courses for the employees within the four year intervals?<\/p>\n Why is that\u00a0an estimated number\u00a0of courses will be organized for teachers in the name of points building\u00a0to renew\u00a0license.<\/p>\n If our employer cannot organize professional development workshops for us freely but we have to pay,\u00a0then we must demand a better\u00a0 of such workshops and the number\u00a0reduced by increasing\u00a0the points per a workshop within a specified\u00a0time.<\/p>\n It should\u00a0not centre on the money but true Professionalism. We must\u00a0also not go through\u00a0untold hardships before our license\u00a0can be renewed. All teachers in a district must\u00a0not leave the classroom\u00a0the whole day to attend a workshop\u00a0in the name of renewal\u00a0of license.
