{"id":1215205,"date":"2022-10-03T08:05:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T08:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/03\/sustainability-requirements-shouldnt-be-a-ruse-to-block-our-cocoa-and-coffee-oppong-nkrumah\/"},"modified":"2022-10-03T08:05:00","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T08:05:00","slug":"sustainability-requirements-shouldnt-be-a-ruse-to-block-our-cocoa-and-coffee-oppong-nkrumah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/10\/03\/sustainability-requirements-shouldnt-be-a-ruse-to-block-our-cocoa-and-coffee-oppong-nkrumah\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainability requirements shouldn&#8217;t be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\">\n<p>Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has called on the European Union (EU) to work with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries to prevent its proposed ethical and sustainable supply chain rules from becoming a burden on the local cocoa and coffee industry.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, though the new legislation is a way to drive better practices within the cocoa and coffee subsector, more importantly, the EU must work with ACP countries in achieving these sustainability standards else it risks putting players within the value chain out of business.<\/p>\n<p>He made the call when he chaired a two-day forum on the future of Ghanaian cocoa and coffee value chains in the face of this new EU legislation at the \u201cAlliances in Ghana: Coffee and Chocolate at the Table\u201d in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"843\" height=\"474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kojo-Oppong-Nkrumah-4.jpeg\" alt=\"Sustainability requirements shouldn't be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah\" class=\"wp-image-10032180793 lazy\"  data- title=\"Sustainability requirements shouldn't be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah\"\/><figcaption>Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah addressing the forum in Brussels, Belgium<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The forum was organised by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Ghanaian Mission in Brussels last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time where farmlands are coming under threats for competing and more rewarding economic activities, sustainability is a matter that requires some more attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy no means, however, should sustainability be used as a pretext to limit market accessibility. The exchange of best practices and technical assistance is necessary so that we can have a win-win situation in all of this.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"843\" height=\"474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kojo-Oppong-Nkrumah-3.jpeg\" alt=\"Sustainability requirements shouldn't be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah\" class=\"wp-image-10032180795 lazy\"  data- title=\"Sustainability requirements shouldn't be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah\"\/><figcaption>The two-day forum was organised by the International Trade Centre and the Ghanaian Mission in Brussels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFarmers deserve recompense for their hard work and should not be left out in any business or policy negotiation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir social reality and cultural context must be considered when designing legislation so they may meet their demands and not bear a disproportionate burden for complying with the regulation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>EU lawmakers have backed a proposal for a law that will ban the sale of agriculture products linked to the destruction of forests and human rights violations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"843\" height=\"474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Kojo-Oppong-Nkrumah-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Sustainability requirements shouldn't be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah\" class=\"wp-image-10032180796 lazy\"  data- title=\"Sustainability requirements shouldn't be a ruse to block our cocoa and coffee \u2013 Oppong Nkrumah\"\/><figcaption>Mr Oppong Nkrumah and some EU officials<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The bill was supported by 453 votes, to 57 with 123 abstentions.
