Eritrea, a country in the Horn of Africa with a population of over 6 million people, is one of the most restrictive governments on the planet. There is no freedom of speech, no freedom of the press, and no freedom of religion.<\/p>\n

Isaias Afewerki was elected president of Eritrea by the national assembly in 1993. Since the country’s independence, he has been the de facto leader, with no legal challenge to his authority.<\/p>\n

In 1997, presidential elections were intended to take place, however, they never did. Adults are also compelled to serve in Eritrea’s military or national service, which can extend for as long as the government desires.<\/p>\n
