{"id":1212144,"date":"2022-09-27T22:04:24","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T22:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/27\/sthenjwa-luthuli-explores-freedom-and-social-restriction-in-imbewu-yokhokho-exhibition\/"},"modified":"2022-09-27T22:04:24","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T22:04:24","slug":"sthenjwa-luthuli-explores-freedom-and-social-restriction-in-imbewu-yokhokho-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/27\/sthenjwa-luthuli-explores-freedom-and-social-restriction-in-imbewu-yokhokho-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\">\n<p>In his first solo exhibition in Accra, Ghana, dubbed Imbewu Yokhokho (The seed of our ancestors), South African artist, Sthenjwa Luthuli displays his masterfully carved and painted wooden reliefs and woodcut prints at the Gallery 1957.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition which is a celebration of time, freedom, his Zulu ancestry and spirituality opened to a large crowd of mostly young people who themselves exhibited the youthful exuberance of Luthuli\u2019s artwork.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibiting about ten pieces in total, Luthuli\u2019s work displayed headless figures suspended in a dance-like dream-like state against a heavily patterned background that often looks like a kaleidoscopic dreamscape.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-09-24-at-9.51.41-PM-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition\" class=\"wp-image-10032178100 lazy\"  data- title=\"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Whereas one may often feel a sense of freedom and energy from some of his paintings, in others it appears they are restrained, bound by twines to the board upon which they float.<\/p>\n<p>This is reminiscent of the social inequality and the many restrictions that racialised groups in his home country experience, in the form of a lack of opportunities and access to proper social infrastructure, further limiting their abilities and keeping them somewhat subjugated.<\/p>\n<p>Thus those not bound by the twines are those that have broken free to dance, to thrive and survive in the unequal society.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-09-24-at-9.51.48-PM-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition\" class=\"wp-image-10032178101 lazy\"  data- title=\"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>His brilliant use of bold colours that shimmer and shift under the light creating a feeling that is as ethereal as his woodprints evokes strong emotions as well as sublime beauty.<\/p>\n<p>While his work critically analyses the ever-shifting social landscape of his home country, it also embodies his Zulu heritage and spiritual self while referencing the ongoing struggles that face racialized groups in post-apartheid South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Luthuli is a socially-conscious artist whose works have been exhibited in Cape Town, Johannesburg, London, Lagos, and beyond.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-09-27-at-9.52.06-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition\" class=\"wp-image-10032178105 lazy\"  data- title=\"Sthenjwa Luthuli explores freedom and social restriction in Imbewu Yokhokho exhibition\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Collectors of his work include musicians Alicia Keys and Kasseem \u201cSwizz Beatz\u201d Dean.<\/p>\n<p>He has cited fellow countrymen\u00a0Ephraim Ngatane\u00a0and\u00a0Gerard Sekoto\u00a0as influences, as well as\u00a0Wangechi Mutu,\u00a0Yinka Shonibare CBE, and\u00a0Edward Hopper.<\/p>\n<p>His exhibition at Gallery 1957 at Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel will last till October 20, 2022.
