{"id":1211525,"date":"2022-09-27T05:43:44","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T05:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/27\/watch-a-new-era-nasa-strikes-asteroid-in-key-test-of-planetary-defence\/"},"modified":"2022-09-27T05:43:44","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T05:43:44","slug":"watch-a-new-era-nasa-strikes-asteroid-in-key-test-of-planetary-defence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/27\/watch-a-new-era-nasa-strikes-asteroid-in-key-test-of-planetary-defence\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: \u2018A new era\u2019: Nasa strikes asteroid in key test of planetary defence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/image-prod.iol.co.za\/16x9\/800?source=https:\/\/xlibris.public.prod.oc.inl.infomaker.io:8443\/opencontent\/objects\/e4be6930-4099-58fb-b30d-eee95638ffc1\" class=\"type:primaryImage\"\/><\/p>\n<p>by Issam Ahmed <\/p>\n<p>Laurel, US, Bullseye: On Monday, a Nasa spaceship struck an asteroid seven million miles away in order to deflect its orbit, succeeding in a historic test of humanity\u2019s ability to prevent a celestial object from devastating life on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (Dart) impactor hit its target, the space rock Dimorphos, at 7.14pm Eastern Time (11.14pm GMT), 10 months after blasting off from California on its pioneering mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re embarking on a new era, an era in which we potentially have the capability to protect ourselves from something like a dangerous hazardous asteroid impact,\u201d said Lori Glaze, the director of Nasa\u2019s planetary science division.<\/p>\n<p>Dimorphos, a 160m asteroid roughly comparable in size to an Egyptian pyramid,- orbits a half-mile long big brother called Didymos. (Photo by Jim WATSON \/ AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Nasa has deemed the experiment important to carry out before a need is discovered.<\/p>\n<p>By striking Dimorphos head on, Nasa hopes to push it into a smaller orbit, shaving 10 minutes off the time it takes to encircle Didymos, which is currently 11 hours and 55 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Ground telescopes, which can\u2019t see the asteroid system directly but can detect a shift in patterns of light coming from it, should provide a definitive orbital period in the coming days and weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The proof-of-concept has made a reality of what has before only been attempted in science fiction,  notably in films such as \u201cArmageddon\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Look Up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"strong-17bbfa7459acd763db4e606e90786339\">Astronomy community abuzz <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Minutes after impact, a toaster-sized satellite called LICIACube, which separated from Dart a few weeks ago, was expected to make a close pass of the site to capture images of the collision and the ejecta \u2013 the pulverized rock thrown off by the strike.<\/p>\n<p>LICIACube\u2019s pictures will be sent back in the next weeks and months.<\/p>\n<p>Also watching the event: an array of telescopes, on Earth and in space \u2013 including the recently operational James Webb \u2013 which might be able to see a brightening cloud of dust.<\/p>\n<div>!function(e,t,r){let n;if(e.getElementById(r))return;const a=e.getElementsByTagName(\u201cscript\u201d)[0];n=e.createElement(\u201cscript\u201d),n.id=r,n.defer=!0,n.src=\u201dhttps:\/\/playback.oovvuu.media\/player\/v1.js\u201d,a.parentNode.insertBefore(n,a)}(document,0,\u201doovvuu-player-sdk\u201d);<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The mission has set the global astronomy community abuzz, with more than three dozen ground telescopes participating, including optical, radio and radar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of them, and it\u2019s incredibly exciting to have lost count,\u201d said Dart mission planetary astronomer Christina Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a full picture of what the system looks like will be revealed when a European Space Agency mission four years down the line called Hera arrives to survey Dimorphos\u2019 surface and measure its mass, which scientists can only guess at.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"strong-1a559b0eacb1c03937b1aa4008348960\">\u2018Earthlings can sleep better\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only a few of the billions of asteroids and comets in our solar system are considered potentially hazardous to our planet, and none are expected in the next 100 years or so.<\/p>\n<p>But wait long enough, and it will happen.<\/p>\n<p>We know that from the geological record \u2013 for example, the 10km wide Chicxulub asteroid struck Earth 66 million years ago, plunging the world into a long winter that led to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs along with 75% of all species.<\/p>\n<p>An asteroid the size of Dimorphos, by contrast, would only cause a regional impact, such as devastating a city, albeit with greater force than any nuclear bomb in history.<\/p>\n<p>How much momentum Dart imparts on Dimorphos will depend on whether the asteroid is solid rock, or more like a \u201crubbish pile\u201d of boulders bound by mutual gravity \u2013 a property that\u2019s not yet known.<\/p>\n<p>If it had missed, Nasa would have another shot in two years, with the spaceship containing just enough fuel for another pass.<\/p>\n<div>!function(e,t,r){let n;if(e.getElementById(r))return;const a=e.getElementsByTagName(\u201cscript\u201d)[0];n=e.createElement(\u201cscript\u201d),n.id=r,n.defer=!0,n.src=\u201dhttps:\/\/playback.oovvuu.media\/player\/v1.js\u201d,a.parentNode.insertBefore(n,a)}(document,0,\u201doovvuu-player-sdk\u201d);<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But its success marks the first step towards a world capable of defending itself from a future existential threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Earthlings can sleep better, definitely I will,\u201d said Dart mission systems engineer Elena Adams.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"strong-db4e08f86f543bbbf5c318401cdfab9c\">AFP<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>!function(e,t,r){let n;if(e.getElementById(r))return;const a=e.getElementsByTagName(\u201cscript\u201d)[0];n=e.createElement(\u201cscript\u201d),n.id=r,n.defer=!0,n.src=\u201dhttps:\/\/playback.oovvuu.media\/player\/v1.js\u201d,a.parentNode.insertBefore(n,a)}(document,0,\u201doovvuu-player-sdk\u201d);<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/technology\/techsperts\/watch-a-new-era-nasa-strikes-asteroid-in-key-test-of-planetary-defence-48b76093-22e4-42e4-8bd1-92afe188abfc\">Source <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Issam Ahmed Laurel, US, Bullseye: On Monday, a Nasa spaceship struck an asteroid seven million miles away in order to deflect its orbit, succeeding in a historic test of humanity\u2019s ability to prevent a celestial object from devastating life on Earth.
