Beninese artist Dimitri Fagbohoun works in his studio near Paris. The sculptor is one of the six artists from Africa or the diaspora whose pieces were showcased in the C\u00e9cile Fakhoury gallery in Paris.<\/p>\n
The French capital has become a stronghold for artists from the continent.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is indisputable that there are more and more galleries that are opening, and that represent African artists, Fagbohoun says.\u00a0We can undoubtedly say that more and more so-called historical galleries are also representing those who are called African artists.\u201d<\/p>\n
In one of Paris\u2019 posh neighbourhoods which is not far from the Champs-Elys\u00e9es and the famous du \u201cTriangle d\u2019Or\u201d where the world\u2019s finest Haute Couture shops are based, hushed conversations are accompanied by champagne.<\/p>\n
The diverse public doesn\u2019t need to travel to New York or London. Thanks to this Parisian summer exhibition opening they can see contemporary African artworks.<\/p>\n
\u201cParis has always been multicultural the way New York City is, and from that point of view, yes, it is an adopted home, the 50-year-old starts.\u00a0However, because we are in Paris, I am inclined to tell you, we make Paris.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are part of this melting pot that makes things bounce back, it\u2019s an energy in which we also take part. It\u2019s not just innate to the city, it\u2019s the result of the diversity, of these blends and what it produces.\u201d<\/p>\n
Whenever Carole Onamb\u00e9l\u00e9 Kvasnevski beholds these art pieces in Paris she knows how far she\u2019s come. The French and Cameroonian gallery owner remembers when she first entered the business in 2010.<\/p>\n
Back, then nobody believed in her art gallery project arguing African art wasn\u2019t a thing. She wishes this renewed popularity will bring a long-lasting shift in mindsets.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne can hope that it\u2019s not just a trend, contemporary art with African artists from the diaspora, that these artists will find their place in world art, in global art and will no longer be labelled as such,\u00a0Carole Onamb\u00e9l\u00e9 Kvasnevski confesses.\u00a0\u2018This is an African contemporary art artist\u2019, It\u2019s an artist\u2026 Think about it, do we say a \u2018European artist\u2019, an \u2018American artist\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
