{"id":1204859,"date":"2022-09-15T10:16:57","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T10:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/15\/cases-of-medical-negligence-in-ghana-on-the-rise\/"},"modified":"2022-09-15T10:16:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T10:16:57","slug":"cases-of-medical-negligence-in-ghana-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/15\/cases-of-medical-negligence-in-ghana-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Cases of medical negligence in Ghana on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div wp_automatic_readability=\"79\">\n<p><figure><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">File photo: Doctor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>A patient-centered non-governmental group is leading a campaign to bring justice to victims of medical negligence in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Advocacy for Medical Malpractice Victims, it has recorded 60% success in medical negligence suits brought against health facilities and medical staff.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service battles rising cases of lawsuits against health facilities and their medical staff.<\/p>\n<p>Advocacy for Medical Malpractice Victims is made up of lawyers, doctors and other health professionals.<\/p>\n<p>It has been championing justice for medical malpractice victims through the payment of compensation, promotion of high competence among healthcare givers, among others.<\/p>\n<p>It receives and investigates between 25 and 30 cases of alleged medical negligence nationwide every\u00a0week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incidence of medical negligence so far as our organisation is concerned is on the high. On the average, we have a minimum of 25 to 30 cases coming through,\u201d said Executive Secretary, Kwame Brobbey Appiah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe listen to the narrative of these patients, assess the complaints they come with and then we are able to make a determination of what to do to help them seek compensation or to seek justice,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/gp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Kwame-Brobbey-Appiah-1024x510.png\" alt=\"Kwame Brobbey Appiah www.myjoyonline.com\" class=\"wp-image-10032171024\" title=\"Cases of medical negligence in Ghana on the rise\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Kwame Brobbey Appiah is Executive Secretary of NGO, Advocacy for Medical Malpractice Victims<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Appiah said the organisation is overwhelmed by the rising cases of medical malpractice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith respect to the high number of cases and huge amounts paid as compensation, I think it\u2019s as a result of \u00a0the awakening that has come to bear now because patients are getting\u00a0empowered by the day; they are getting to know their rights as they also want to exercise their responsibilities and I think the more we keep on this trajectory, the health sector will sit up and\u00a0then do the needful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His organization has a 60 percent success rate of reported but investigated cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been very successful. I can say that on the average, 55-60 percent. So we\u2019ve been successful and others too have been settled out of court,\u201d Mr Appiah said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/gp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Dr.-Emmanuel-Tinkorang-1024x531.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang myjoyonline.com\" class=\"wp-image-10031601284\" title=\"Cases of medical negligence in Ghana on the rise\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang is head of Ghana Health Service in Ashanti region<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work of Mr Appiah\u2019s organisation appears to be impacting negatively on the Ghana Health Service as huge sums of money are doled out in compensation to victims of medical negligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last 2-months, I have been on a crusade visiting all the health centers trying to see how best we can address the attitude of health workers\u00a0as far as their work ethics is concerned,\u201d Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr Emmanuel Kojo Tinkorang has said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were also health workers; we were all in public health working in a government institution and the way we were doing our work is quite different from the health workers we see today. There was a lot of commitment; a lot of hard work and a lot of right attitude. But you don\u2019t see it this time like that so sometimes I am saddened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wants attitudinal change to\u00a0curb growing cases of legal suits against the directorate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently, we\u2019ve had a lot of legal cases.
