Over the weekend, the two leading candidates of the 2024 elections met face to face. It is a little over 2 years to the next elections and yet the political tension in the country is rising steadily. For the opposition National Democratic Congress, it looks like John Mahama, the presidential candidate of the 2012, 2016 and 2020 elections will be elected flagbearer for the next elections. For the ruling New Patriotic Party, there is a herculean task ahead.<\/p>\n

Former President John Mahama and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia met at the funeral of Opanyin Samuel Kwame Agyepong, the late father of the executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies. The two statesmen were captured in stunning photos as they talked and joked. Many have tried to understand what might have caused the laughter between the two.<\/p>\n

Well on Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom Otchere tried to explain what transpired between the two. Paul explained that Bawumia told Mahama that he is coming and that the former president should lace his boots and get ready to him. Paul notes that Mahama also might have said that until you win your party\u2019s flagbearer race you can\u2019t tell me to lace my boots.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey talked a lot. Mahama was saying, Chief, I have already won my nomination. It hasn\u2019t happened but I will win. You go and win yours and come let us talk\u201d Paul Adom tried to explain.<\/p>\n

Paul jokingly said that Mahama advised Bawumia to go and work hard to win his party\u2019s nod before he can challenge him because he Mahama has already won his party\u2019s nod to lead. Paul might not be far from the truth. Though what was said between the two wasn\u2019t heard it could possibly be about their upcoming contest in 2024.<\/p>\n

Bawumia would have to scale a herculean task if he is to lead the NPP. Many feel the race is a 2-way race between Alan Kyerematen and Bawumia. Kennedy Agyapong may be another surprising force to reckon with. The question however remains as to whether Bawumia can pick his party\u2019s ticket and challenge John Mahama in election 2024.<\/p>\n
