{"id":1204274,"date":"2022-09-14T14:11:04","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T14:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/14\/kojo-rebrands-expands-builds-on-saas-construction-tech-platform\/"},"modified":"2022-09-14T14:11:04","modified_gmt":"2022-09-14T14:11:04","slug":"kojo-rebrands-expands-builds-on-saas-construction-tech-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/14\/kojo-rebrands-expands-builds-on-saas-construction-tech-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"Kojo rebrands, expands, builds on SaaS construction tech platform \u2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kojo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a startup that aims <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to help construction companies in the U.S. manage their materials supply chains \u201cseamlessly,\u201d has raised $39 million in a Series C round of funding led by Battery Ventures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2018 as Agora, the company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised $33 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a Tiger Global-led Series B round in August of 2021. It\u2019s been busy since. Earlier this year, the startup <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebranded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Kojo and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from serving just one construction trade \u2014 electrical \u2014 to eight, including mechanical, concrete, drywall, roofing, flooring, site preparation and self-perform general contractors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, the startup\u2019s mission is to help its clients cut back on the amount of waste they produce on projects, and thus spend far less on materials. In other words, it provides software to help <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">contractors get the best price for the materials they use in construction projects so they save a lot more money, move faster and have less waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already saved our customers more than $19 million on their materials orders and reduced up to 90% of the waste left over on their jobs,\u201d said CEO and co-founder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Maria Rioumine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Kojo brought its product to market in early 2020, it has powered the construction of nearly 10,000 projects, including hospitals, schools, stadiums, office buildings and multifamily housing developments. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently processing over $1 billion in materials orders for thousands of users, operating as a SaaS business, meaning it sells annual subscriptions to its software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need for more efficiency in the $800 billion a year construction world has long existed, with productivity challenges plaguing the industry for decades. Factor in today\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soaring construction costs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">material and labor shortages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply chain constrain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and there is more demand than ever from contractors for technology that will help them operate more efficiently and less expensively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kojo claims it can help contractors save as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars in materials annually due to far less waste, while also cutting down their order process time by 50%.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Rioumine declined to reveal hard revenue figures, she said Kojo has grown its annual recurring revenue (ARR) by 3.5 times over the past year. And in the last 18 months, it has grown its number of users by 12x.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in the last year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kojo has more than doubled its team to 90 employees and launched three new products: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inventory management, bills of material (BOM) and invoice matching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith the addition of these three products, we have become a fully end-to-end platform, allowing contractors to manage materials from pre-construction planning to payments,\u201d Rioumine told .<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2397126\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2397126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Image Credits:<\/strong> Maria Rioumine, co-founder and CEO of Kojo \/ Kojo<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New investors Schneider Electric, RXR and Bienville Capital participated in the company\u2019s latest financing, which brings its total raised to $84 million. Existing backers including 8VC, Suffolk Construction, Human Capital, AME and BoxGroup also doubled down on their investments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kojo declined to reveal at what valuation it raised its Series C, with Rioumine describing it only as \u201can up round.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company plans to use its new capital to continue building out its team and invest in new offerings that cross over to the fintech world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contractors will be able to reconcile invoices and pay for materials directly on Kojo\u2019s platform, and with new distributor integrations, contractors will also be able to directly see distributor pricing and inventory to aid in making \u201cthe best buying decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have an ambitious roadmap of products that are going to help contractors make even better buying decisions, streamline payments for them and allow them to more accurately track project spend,\u201d Rioumine told . \u201cThe process for managing payments in construction is very painful for our customers, so we\u2019re very excited for the new product launches we have coming up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is construction was considered an unsexy market by people building tech companies for far too long. We\u2019re excited to be changing that,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Brown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, general partner at Battery Ventures, is joining Kojo\u2019s board of directors as part of his firm\u2019s investment. He believes the construction industry has been \u201cunderserved\u201d by technology \u201cfor far too long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his view, this is \u201cunacceptable considering that this is one of the biggest and most important industries in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026More than $300 billion of commercial construction materials are ordered every year in the U.S. using systems that often haven\u2019t been updated since the 1980s, leading to enormous amounts of waste,\u201d Brown wrote via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He notes that by using Kojo, supervisors spend about 38% less time on materials management, back-office staff save approximately 75% of time processing purchase orders and customers save around 3 to 5% on materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith Kojo, field technicians can search for and select construction materials specific to their trade \u2014 all from their mobile device! Material lists autogenerate requests for quotes from construction material suppliers.
