{"id":1199961,"date":"2022-09-07T10:06:52","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T10:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/07\/crypto-com-pulls-out-of-uefa-champions-league-deal\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T10:06:52","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T10:06:52","slug":"crypto-com-pulls-out-of-uefa-champions-league-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/09\/07\/crypto-com-pulls-out-of-uefa-champions-league-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto.com pulls out of UEFA Champions League deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"391\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image_2022-09-06_160339344-696x391.png\"   alt=\"\" title=\"UEFA Champions League\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Crypto.com has pulled out of a sponsorship deal with UEFA for the Champions League, the BBC understands.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, worth \u00a3428m over five seasons, is said to have fallen through at the \u201clast moment\u201d, amid concerns about increased crypto regulation.<\/p>\n<p>The cryptocurrency exchange site was set to replace Gazprom after Uefa severed links with the Russian energy provider over the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>The concerns are thought to relate to potential legal trading restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years digital assets have moved from the fringes of the economy and have entered the mainstream, with more and more football sponsorship deals being confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid signed an agreement with trading platform WhaleFin and Manchester City have OKX as their training kit partner.<\/p>\n<p>Watford have previously had Bitcoin as a club sponsor and\u00a0accepted the cryptocurrency at the club.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Spanish striker David Barral made football history when his move from Real Madrid to DUX International de Madrid was paid for using Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>According to Uefa, the cryptocurrency sector has partly helped clubs to fill the revenue streams that were lost as a result of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>But critics say there are concerns about the volatility of the crypto market \u2013 particularly that the plummeting price of tokens can expose fans to potential debts.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these lucrative sponsorship deals, Bitcoin is down almost 70% from its historic November 2021 high, Ethereum is down more than 70%, and several crypto exchanges have laid off workers en masse.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Crypto.com cut almost 5% of its workforce \u2013 about 260 employees \u2013 according to chief executive Kris Marszalek.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lot&#8217;s of questions and speculation flying around regarding what https:\/\/t.co\/pFc4PzqqHR is doing during the market downturn.
