India\u2019s antitrust watchdog has approved PayU\u2019s proposed acquisition of payments gateway BillDesk, the second largest M&A deal in the South Asian market\u2019s consumer internet space, more than a year after the two firms announced their merger plan.<\/p>\n
The Competition Commission of India said in a tweet that the deal had been approved, but did not elaborate. The watchdog extensively evaluated the scope of the deal, announced in August last year, in recent quarters, meeting several competitors and other industry players, people familiar with the matter said.<\/p>\n
The CCI asked the two firms to submit a fresh application in April this year, Indian news outlet CapTable reported earlier.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople in the know say the deal is under intense scrutiny from an antitrust perspective mainly because of the string of acquisitions that PayU and its parent entity, Naspers, have made in India and also because of the combined size of the two companies.\u201d the outlet added.<\/p>\n
Prosus Ventures-owned PayU and 20-year-old BillDesk process a significant amount of payments transactions in India. Once combined, they will assume a clear lead in the Indian market \u2014 music to investors\u2019 ears but worrying signs for any regulator.<\/p>\n
\u201cTogether, PayU India and BillDesk will be able to meet the changing payments needs of digital consumers, merchants and Government enterprises in India and offer state-of-the-art technology to even more of the excluded sections of society, while adhering to the regulatory environment in India and delivering robust consumer protection,\u201d Prosus said at the time of acquisition announcement.<\/p>\n
