Olivia Wilde says that making \u201cs***** movies\u201d helped prepare her for directing.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old star has helmed the much-anticipated new movie \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u201d, which features Harry Styles and Florence Pugh in the lead roles, and revealed that her forgettable acting experiences had shaped her approach behind the camera.<\/p>\n
In a conversation with Maggie Gyllenhaal for Interview Magazine, Olivia said: \u201cIt helps me navigate any feelings about movies that I don\u2019t think are great when I look back on them, and it helps me understand them within the context of my proxy film school experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve made like 5 000 times more s***** movies than you have.\u201d<\/p>\n
Watch video:<\/strong><\/p>\n She continued: \u201cI\u2019ve been in some really bad ones, and now I think, \u2018I did those to learn all the cautionary tales that would help me define myself as a director: how I will never speak to a crew, how I will never speak to actors, how I will never schedule a movie.\u2019 <\/p>\n \u201cAll of that comes from those bad experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n Wilde recalled how working with Mark Duplass on the 2015 horror film \u201cThe Lazarus Effect\u201d had a lasting impact on her evolution into directing.<\/p>\n The \u201cBooksmart\u201d film-maker said: \u201cI remember making this tiny horror movie with Mark Duplass many years ago. He was so understanding of this really terrible schedule that we had.<\/p>\n \u201cThe movie was very challenging for all these seemingly avoidable reasons, so I\u2019d go back to the trailer and want to talk mad s***. <\/p>\n \u201cAnd Mark said, \u2018Until you direct a movie, you can\u2019t really understand how difficult it is. Go direct, go produce, and then you\u2019ll understand\u2019, and he was right.\u201d<\/p>\n Wilde has a supporting role in \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u201d and revealed that she only cast herself out of necessity.<\/p>\n She explained: \u201cWe basically ran out of money and I needed someone who would take a really low salary, but I wanted it to be someone who understood the role.<\/p>\n \u201cIt got to the point where it was down to the wire and our casting director was like, \u2018Olivia, why don\u2019t you just do it?’\u201d<\/p>\n
