The Duchess of Sussex feels she wasn\u2019t \u201ctreated as a black woman\u201d until she started dating Prince Harry.<\/p>\n
The 41-year-old duchess identifies as being mixed race, and she believes that the focus on her race became intense when she started dating Harry in 2016.<\/p>\n
During a conversation with Mariah Carey on her \u201cArchetypes\u201d podcast, the duchess shared: \u201cI had read this article about Halle Berry, and they were asking her how she felt being treated as a mixed-race woman in the world. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd her response was her saying, \u2018Well, your experience through the world is how people view you.\u2019 So she said because she was darker in colour, she was being treated as a black woman, not as a mixed woman.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think for us, it\u2019s very different because we\u2019re light-skinned. You\u2019re not treated as a black woman. You\u2019re not treated as a white woman. You sort of fit in between.\u201d<\/p>\n
The duchess \u2013 who has Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 14 months, with Harry \u2013 starred in the TV drama series \u201cSuits\u201d before she started dating the prince.<\/p>\n
And she recalled how her life changed when news of their romance became public.<\/p>\n
The duchess, who married Harry in 2018, said: \u201cI mean, if there\u2019s any time in my life that it\u2019s been more focused on my race, it\u2019s only once I started dating my husband. Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause up until then, I had been treated like a mixed woman. And things really shifted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mariah, 53, admitted that she\u2019s felt under pressure at times to identify as black or white.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI always thought it should be okay to say I\u2019m mixed. Like, it should be okay to say that. But people want you to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n
