{"id":1194295,"date":"2022-08-29T21:17:47","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T21:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/29\/nla-to-seek-a-gs-advice-on-celebrities-as-brand-ambassadors-for-betting-companies\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T21:17:47","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T21:17:47","slug":"nla-to-seek-a-gs-advice-on-celebrities-as-brand-ambassadors-for-betting-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/29\/nla-to-seek-a-gs-advice-on-celebrities-as-brand-ambassadors-for-betting-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"NLA to seek A-G&#8217;s advice on celebrities as brand ambassadors for betting companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"NLA to seek A-G's advice on celebrities as brand ambassadors for betting companies\" title=\"NLA to seek A-G's advice on celebrities as brand ambassadors for betting companies\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>The National Lottery Authority (NLA) says it is seeking counsel from the Attorney-General on the possibility of allowing betting companies to use celebrities as brand ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Roselyn Felli on <strong>Prime Morning<\/strong> Monday, Director-General of NLA, Sammi Awuku, explained that the Authority, as a regulatory body, can legally authorise betting companies to use celebrities for advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>The Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 271), bans betting companies from using celebrities in their advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the Gaming Commission gave effect to this provision in the Act. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Commission, the move was necessitated by the increasing number of celebrities  betting companies \u2013 an action many say could lure young fans into gambling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"ivYnlTTSJus\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NLA to seek AG&#039;s advice to allow celebrities as brand ambassadors; endorse betting\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ivYnlTTSJus?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But the Director-General contends that if the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has been able to regularise the activities of celebrities in  products, then it is possible for the Lottery Authority to do so as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take the FDA, that\u2019s another regulatory body in the space of food and drugs, they\u2019re able to also pull the brakes when it comes to celebrity endorsements on some of these alcoholic beverages. NLA is also a regulatory body, so we need to have that understanding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that, \u201cWe will also seek the advice of the Attorney-General to see if the NLA can enter into that space of getting some of the brand ambassadors in the industry of sports, entertainment, and all to also do some brand endorsement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Awuku also revealed that quite a number of fraudsters are currently on trial for various criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>He indicated that his outfit, in collaboration with the Police, is working to nip the activities in the bud.<\/p>\n<p>The NLA boss is confident the SIM card re-registration will help combat the activities of fraudsters in the lottery space.<\/p>\n<p>                <!-- Post Tags --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Lottery Authority (NLA) says it is seeking counsel from the Attorney-General on the possibility of allowing betting companies to use celebrities as brand ambassadors.
