{"id":1193662,"date":"2022-08-29T12:04:12","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T12:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/29\/it-will-take-a-new-chief-justice-to-repair-broken-image-of-judiciary-mahama\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T12:04:12","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T12:04:12","slug":"it-will-take-a-new-chief-justice-to-repair-broken-image-of-judiciary-mahama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/29\/it-will-take-a-new-chief-justice-to-repair-broken-image-of-judiciary-mahama\/","title":{"rendered":"It will take a new Chief Justice to repair &#8216;broken image&#8217; of Judiciary &#8211; Mahama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"It will take a new Chief Justice to repair 'broken image' of Judiciary - Mahama\" title=\"It will take a new Chief Justice to repair 'broken image' of Judiciary - Mahama\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>Former President, John Dramani Mahama says it will take a new Chief Justice to repair the \u2018broken image\u2019 of the Judiciary. <\/p>\n<p>According to him, the current leadership of the Judiciary lacks what it takes to redeem its sunken image, hence the need for a new Chief Justice. <\/p>\n<p>Addressing a gathering at the NDC\u2019s Lawyers\u2019 Conference on Sunday, Mr Mahama explained that, a perceived independent Judiciary is a vital element in safeguarding the country\u2019s democracy. <\/p>\n<p>He however noted that, the current Judiciary has become an item of ridicule and mistrust, and therefore the need for a new Chief Justice to restore public confidence in the courts. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is therefore the urgent need for the Ghanaian Judiciary to work to win the trust and confidence of the citizenry, and erase the widely held perception of hostility and political bias in legal proceedings at the highest courts of the land. <\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, we have no hope that the current leadership of our Judiciary can lead such a process of change. We can only hope, that a new Chief Justice will lead the process to repair the broken image that our Judiciary has acquired over the last few years\u201d, Mahama said. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1332887206&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true&#038;visual=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Still on the Judiciary, he intimated that the public perception of bias on the part of the Judiciary, poses an \u2018existential threat\u2019 to the country\u2019s democracy. <\/p>\n<p>In his view, the fact that many citizens continue to ridicule the Judiciary as a \u2018Unanimous FC\u2019, is a problem which must be addressed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo badly has the image of our Judiciary deteriorated. That many of our citizenry openly make mockery of our justice system and of our justices. The phrase \u2018Go to Court\u2019 is these days met with derisive laughter, instead of hope that one will truly get justice\u201d, Mr Mahama lamented. <\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cIf people are not poking fun about politics and inducements being used to sway the hand of justice in the lower courts, then it is poking fun and making statements about the 7-0 of the \u2018Unanimous FC\u2019 \u201c. <\/p>\n<p>The former President also emphasised that, \u201cthis is an unfortunate development. One of the scariest existential threat to any existential threat to any democracy is when citizens think their judiciary holds no value for them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In recent times, the Judiciary has come under widespread criticism due to the unanimous nature of some of its rulings. <\/p>\n<p>The unanimity in its judgements, has subsequently being perceived by a section of the public as politically motivated. <\/p>\n<p>This, Mr Mahama believes must be cured to preserve the integrity of the courts in the dispensation of justice. <\/p>\n<p>In a related development, the former President also described the Akufo-Addo regime as \u2018the greatest political scam in the 4th Republic\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>His assertions were based on the prevailing economic challenges in the country.<\/p>\n<p>This, for Mr Mahama, is a proof of the incompetence of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia led administration.<\/p>\n<p>He therefore reiterated the readiness of the NDC to better the situation in the future. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhanaians are looking up to the NDC to restore hope and turn the fortunes of our motherland around from the pitiable state in which we currently find ourselves\u201d, he added. <\/p>\n<p>                <!-- Post Tags --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President, John Dramani Mahama says it will take a new Chief Justice to repair the \u2018broken image\u2019 of the Judiciary.
