{"id":1193157,"date":"2022-08-28T21:51:50","date_gmt":"2022-08-28T21:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/28\/perception-that-corruption-is-getting-worse-in-ghana-is-worrying-harriet-thompson\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T21:51:50","modified_gmt":"2022-08-28T21:51:50","slug":"perception-that-corruption-is-getting-worse-in-ghana-is-worrying-harriet-thompson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/28\/perception-that-corruption-is-getting-worse-in-ghana-is-worrying-harriet-thompson\/","title":{"rendered":"Perception that corruption is getting worse in Ghana is worrying \u2013 Harriet Thompson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"Perception that corruption is getting worse in Ghana is worrying \u2013 Harriet Thompson\" title=\"Perception that corruption is getting worse in Ghana is worrying \u2013 Harriet Thompson\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson has described as worrying the perception that corruption is getting worse in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on <strong>JoyNews\u2019 The Probe<\/strong>, Madam Thompson said the situation is of concern. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised to arrive in Ghana\u2026 about strength of feeling around corruption and certainly the perception is getting worse in Ghana and it is really of concern,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1332963403&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true&#038;visual=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to her, the government ought to check views on corruption from where they are coming from, adding that investigations should be conducted and the culprits should be held accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was great to see for example the Office of the Special Prosecutor recently seizing the assets of a well-known  that is a great example of those institutions,\u201d the High Commissioner cited the Labianca case.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the Office of the Special Prosecutor should be resourced to undertake more of such actions.<\/p>\n<p>She added that institutions set up to fight corruption in the country must be independent and perform their functions without fear or favour.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has cited a  belonging to a member of the Council of State for influence-peddling in the running of its activities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-myjoyonline-com wp-block-embed-myjoyonline-com\"\/>\n<p>The council member, Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh, is also the owner and Chief Executive of Labianca Company Limited, the entity under investigation by the OSP.<\/p>\n<p>She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority (GPHA).<\/p>\n<p>The case also had the Deputy Commissioner of Customs in Charge of Operations questioned in the custom advance ruling regarding some unlawfully reduced benchmark values.<\/p>\n<p>The Office has consequently recovered GHC\u00a21.074 million\u00a0from Labianca as part of the shortfall in\u00a0import duties the frozen foods \u00a0had paid to the state.<\/p>\n<p>                <!-- Post Tags --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson has described as worrying the perception that corruption is getting worse in the country.
