{"id":1192735,"date":"2022-08-28T11:32:19","date_gmt":"2022-08-28T11:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/28\/ghanaians-split-on-impact-of-current-hung-parliament-afrobarometer-survey-politics\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T11:32:19","modified_gmt":"2022-08-28T11:32:19","slug":"ghanaians-split-on-impact-of-current-hung-parliament-afrobarometer-survey-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/28\/ghanaians-split-on-impact-of-current-hung-parliament-afrobarometer-survey-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghanaians Split On Impact Of Current \u2018Hung\u2019 Parliament &#8211; Afrobarometer Survey | Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Almost half of Ghanaians say the country\u2019s \u201chung\u201d Parliament has made members of Parliament (MPs) more effective at scrutinising government spending, the recent\u00a0Afrobarometer survey indicates.<\/p>\n<p>But fewer see gains in MP effectiveness at passing laws or building consensus among political parties in the current Parliament, which for the first time is equally divided\u00a0between the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n<p>Survey findings show strong public support for the central role of MPs in making laws and holding the president accountable.<\/p>\n<p>But few citizens think MPs listen to what their constituents say, and most give their elected representatives a negative performance review.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Almost half (46%) of Ghanaians think the composition of the 8th (\u201chung\u201d) Parliament has made MPs \u201csomewhat more\u201d or \u201cmuch more\u201d effective in scrutinising\u00a0government spending (Figure 1).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; But fewer think MPs have been more effective at passing laws (39%) or more likely\u00a0to cooperate and build consensus with members of other political parties (39%).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Large majorities endorse the role of MPs in a democratic system:<br \/>More than eight in 10 (82%) say Parliament should monitor how the government spends taxpayers\u2019 money, and three-fourths (75%) say MPs should make laws for\u00a0the country even if the president does not agree (Figure 2).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ghanaians are divided on who is responsible for ensuring that MPs do their jobs: 38% say it\u2019s the president, while 35% say it\u2019s the voters (Figure 3).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Most Ghanaians (85%) say their MPs \u201cnever\u201d or only \u201csometimes\u201d listen to what people have to say.
