{"id":1191449,"date":"2022-08-26T17:19:45","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T17:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/26\/ghanaians-divided-on-hung-parliaments-effectiveness-afrobarometer\/"},"modified":"2022-08-26T17:19:45","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T17:19:45","slug":"ghanaians-divided-on-hung-parliaments-effectiveness-afrobarometer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/26\/ghanaians-divided-on-hung-parliaments-effectiveness-afrobarometer\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness &#8211; Afrobarometer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness - Afrobarometer\" title=\"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness - Afrobarometer\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>A new study has revealed that Ghanaians are divided on the effectiveness of the hung parliament.<\/p>\n<p>About 46% of the populace believes the current dispensation has made legislators \u201csomewhat more\u201d or \u201cmuch more effective in scrutinising government spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut fewer see gains in MP effectiveness at passing laws or building consensus among political parties in the current Parliament, which for the first time is equally divided between the ruling NPP and the opposition NDC.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"692\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-179.png\" alt=\"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness - Afrobarometer\" class=\"wp-image-10032159781\"   title=\"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness - Afrobarometer\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>This was the conclusion of a study conducted by Afrobarometer in collaboration with the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).<\/p>\n<p>It was released on Friday, August 26, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The House\u2019s hung nature stemmed from the nearly equal number of Parliamentary seats between the ruling NPP (138  an Independent Candidate) and the NDC (137).<\/p>\n<p>This brought hope to many experts who were concerned about what many described as the rubber stamp style of decision-making in the House. <\/p>\n<p>The House has seen a number of tough times during deliberations as parliamentarians are sometimes unable to reach a consensus over issues, with some ending in fisticuffs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"789\" height=\"482\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-180.png\" alt=\"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness - Afrobarometer\" class=\"wp-image-10032159815\"   title=\"Ghanaians divided on hung parliament\u2019s effectiveness - Afrobarometer\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the revelations above, the study insisted that the \u201csurvey findings show strong public support for the central role of MPs in making laws and holding the president accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a \u201cfew citizens think MPs listen to what their constituents say, and most give their elected representatives a negative performance review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the entity responsible for holding legislators accountable, the respondents were \u201cdivided on who is responsible for ensuring that MPs do their jobs: 38% say it\u2019s the president, while 35% say it\u2019s the voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, \u201cmost Ghanaians (85%) say their MPs \u2018never\u2019 or only \u2018sometimes\u2019 listen to what people have to say.
