{"id":1191417,"date":"2022-08-26T16:42:34","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T16:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/26\/the-cedi-will-begin-to-stabilise-by-next-week-government-assures\/"},"modified":"2022-08-26T16:42:34","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T16:42:34","slug":"the-cedi-will-begin-to-stabilise-by-next-week-government-assures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/26\/the-cedi-will-begin-to-stabilise-by-next-week-government-assures\/","title":{"rendered":"The cedi will begin to stabilise by next week &#8211; Government assures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"The cedi will begin to stabilise by next week - Government assures\" title=\"The cedi will begin to stabilise by next week - Government assures\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>Government has assured that measures have been implemented to stabilise the fast depreciating currency.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, the cedi will begin to stabilise by next week.<\/p>\n<p>This, he said is because the government \u201chas taken steps to ensure that we can address some of the real concerns with regards to making more hard currency available for importers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also mentioned that the government has entered into an agreement with mining and gas companies to sell their forex to the Bank of Ghana as means of stabilising the cedi.<\/p>\n<p>This, according to the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, will help \u201csupport the reserve position\u201d to honour the imports of the mining and gas companies.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Adu Boahen\u2019s assurance comes in the wake of the nation\u2019s currency having depreciated significantly in the last six months, reaching a record high of being traded for a single dollar at \u00a210.<\/p>\n<p>Also, a recent currency performance ranking by Bloomberg classified the cedi as the worst-performing currency across the globe after Sri Lanka\u2019s Rupee.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg tracked the performance of 150 currencies in the world and the cedi placed last but one in terms of performance since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1331799640&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true&#038;visual=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Adu Boahen stated that the $750 million African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) loan that government has contracted will help shore up the currency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see the stabilisation happening next week. The Afrexim facility should be here by Monday at the latest and that should begin towards the first step toward making sure that the stabilisation occurs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Adu Boahen blamed the depreciation of the cedi on \u2018unnecessary speculative activities.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that there are a lot of speculative activities that are creating some unnecessary depreciation in the currency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1331800513&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true&#038;visual=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In a related development, the Council of State on Thursday held a crunch meeting with the Finance Ministry and top officials from the BoG to afford it an opportunity to understand the current state of affairs.<\/p>\n<p>In an interaction with the media, the Chairman of the Council of State, Nana Otuo Serebuor II said the meeting was held because members of the Council are concerned about the current state of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the Council of State is an advisory body to the government and naturally we are disturbed like any other Ghanaian over the state of the economy particularly the free fall of the cedi relative to other major currencies,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Nana Otuo Serebuor II stated that the underlining causes of the cedi were highlighted and short and medium-term solutions were approved during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Association of Bankers says the current state of affairs is greatly affecting business.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-myjoyonline-com wp-block-embed-myjoyonline-com\"\/>\n<p>The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB),\u00a0John Awuah, says the Banks are having a fair share of the pressures of the country\u2019s current economic state.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the banks are also going through some tough times just like any other economic actor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the residual recipient of risk in the country,\u201d Mr Awuah said in an interview on JoyNews\u2019 PM Express Business Edition on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>                <!-- Post Tags --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government has assured that measures have been implemented to stabilise the fast depreciating currency.
