Senior Programmes Manager at Ghana Integrity\u00a0Initiative\u00a0(GII), Mary Awelana Addah, says the work of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, is engendering the trust of people in government\u2019s fight against corruption.<\/p>\n
According to her, while there were many concerns following his appointment as Special Prosecutor, over the past few months his activities at the office \u201cis beginning to show that he is actually interested in doing this work whether it hurts the party which appointed him, whether he believes in their ideology or not, he would want to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
She argued that while the Special Prosecutor\u2019s foray into some cases such as the ongoing investigation into the Labianca and the Customs Division have drawn attacks from communicators of the ruling party, his strong stance to go forward brings fresh momentum to the anti-graft campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd if you listen to the anger and the commentary around the issues that he\u2019s dealing with you\u2019d realize that some party communicators have gone out there to indicate their displeasure on some of the things he is doing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember about two weeks ago when this Labianca thing came out, on most of the radio stations it was out there that he\u2019s not doing enough so they want to see him fight corruption from the opposition side. So it\u2019s like he\u2019s witch hunting. But he\u2019s doing the work; this is what we want to see. As a people we want to see more of this investigations coming up,\u201d she said on JoyNews\u2019 PM Express.<\/p>\n
Mary Addah explained that should the Special Prosecutor continue on this tangent and finally start actually prosecuting people and retrieving assets, as his office is expected to, it would give courage to whistleblowers to file complaints to aid in the anti-graft fight.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has the potential of engendering trust of the people in the fight against corruption. So those who were reluctant in releasing whistleblower complaints are now quick to bring them to the SP to investigate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd as you indicated, he\u2019s already getting a lot of cases and unfortunately he still does not have the needed logistics to engage in all of them. But the visibility he\u2019s gaining for himself and the office through the cases he\u2019s pursuing is good.<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing forward I believe that a lot could be done if indeed he\u2019s steadfast and continues to engage the public and also engage holistically in this fight, not looking at anybody be it the President himself or whoever because he\u2019s there to fight corruption.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is what the Act says, any act that looks like corruption he\u2019s there to prevent its occurrence, he\u2019s there also to assist us to recover assets and he\u2019s already started doing that. We should be a little happy with that and hope that as we go forward a lot more will be done,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
