{"id":1187423,"date":"2022-08-23T08:13:57","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T08:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/23\/too-bad-90-of-accras-basic-schools-need-new-classrooms-to-address-overcrowding\/"},"modified":"2022-08-23T08:13:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T08:13:57","slug":"too-bad-90-of-accras-basic-schools-need-new-classrooms-to-address-overcrowding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/23\/too-bad-90-of-accras-basic-schools-need-new-classrooms-to-address-overcrowding\/","title":{"rendered":"[Too Bad] 90% Of Accra\u2019s Basic Schools Need New Classrooms To Address Overcrowding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<article>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/7efcc417d550400a85f659a20f2fa44d\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An investigative Eduwatch report on Basic Education Infrastructure has instituted that there&#8217;s a timely need to be injected in schools in Accra to enhance proper learning and concrete supervision in schools in producing top-notch brilliant students for the tertiary education cycle. <\/p>\n<p>The declining budgetary allocation to basic education has caused a slow growth of public basic education infrastructure from 1,036 new schools in 2015\/16 to 487 in 2019\/20.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is much felt in the Greater Accra Region where only 19 schools were constructed in 2018\/19 compared to 98 schools in 2015\/16, and this is a region with the highest population growth of 36% every ten years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/d22ea178bedc42908866981405bd789c\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The outcome is a gradual denial of access to free basic education to the urban poor, and overcrowded classrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In schools like Divine Mercy Catholic Basic\u00a0(Ga West) and Oblogo 1&#038;2 MA Basic (Weija-Gbawe), there are up to 120 in a classroom, against a GES recommended 35.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore not surprising that only 34% of Basic 4 pupils in the Greater Accra Region demonstrated\u00a0proficiency in Maths in the 2021 National Standard Test, compared to a national average of 38%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Government must fund a plan to increase basic school infrastructure in urban areas, in line with the population growth.
