{"id":1186601,"date":"2022-08-22T12:48:58","date_gmt":"2022-08-22T12:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/22\/etoo-salutes-abedi-pele\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T12:48:58","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T12:48:58","slug":"etoo-salutes-abedi-pele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/22\/etoo-salutes-abedi-pele\/","title":{"rendered":"Eto&#8217;o Salutes Abedi Pele &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Cameroon legend Samuel Eto\u2019o has lauded three times African player of the year, Abedi Pele, as his all-time Ghanaian favourite footballer.<\/p>\n<p>Nicknamed the Maestro, the former Marseille legend took African and European football by storm in the late 80s and early nineties.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, he helped Marseille win the UEFA Champions League.<\/p>\n<p>The former Torino midfielder became the first player to win the African Player of the Year three successive times from 1991 to 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Abedi Pele was a member of the Black Stars team that won Ghana\u2019s last AFCON in 1982 in Libya, and played a pivotal role in the Senegal 92 AFCON, but missed the final due to a red card suspension.<\/p>\n<p>The current Cameroon football president mentioned the likes of Michael Essien and Asamoah Gyan as some of his admirers, but singled out the Maestro as his favourite.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on TV3, Eto\u2019o said: \u201cAbedi Pele is one of the best ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eto\u2019o is in Ghana for ambassadorial work, following his role as Qatar Legacy Ambassador for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana is one of the five countries representing Africa at the championship this November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Kofi Owusu Aduonum<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 2 -->\n\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cameroon legend Samuel Eto\u2019o has lauded three times African player of the year, Abedi Pele, as his all-time Ghanaian favourite footballer.
