{"id":1184448,"date":"2022-08-19T19:18:03","date_gmt":"2022-08-19T19:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/19\/bog-governor-must-assert-independence-and-credibility-or-resign-minority\/"},"modified":"2022-08-19T19:18:03","modified_gmt":"2022-08-19T19:18:03","slug":"bog-governor-must-assert-independence-and-credibility-or-resign-minority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/19\/bog-governor-must-assert-independence-and-credibility-or-resign-minority\/","title":{"rendered":"BoG Governor must assert independence and credibility or resign &#8211; Minority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"BoG Governor must assert independence and credibility or resign - Minority\" title=\"BoG Governor must assert independence and credibility or resign - Minority\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>The Minority in Parliament has asked the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison to assert his independence and credibility.<\/p>\n<p>In a release dated August 19, 2022, the Minority group asked that if the BoG\u2019s Governor is unable to do that, then he should \u201cresign\u201d immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The request for Dr. Addison to resign is among demands made by the Minority Caucus in the statement issued on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The rest are:<\/p>\n<p>a) Conduct a complete overhaul of its monetary policy framework to improve transparency and credibility. This must include publication of its Minutes and clarity on its forecasting and policy analysis model.<\/p>\n<p>b) Yield to Parliamentary oversight in its dealings, particularly on the issue of money printing to finance government spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>c) BOG must cease forthwith the fiscal dominance regime the bank is superintending. It is dangerous for the future and undermines the fight against inflation for both the short term and the medium term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The demands come on the back of the Bank of Ghana\u2019s announcement of an increase in the monetary policy rate by 300 basis points to 22%, after an Emergency Monetary Policy Committee meeting on August 17<sup>th<\/sup>, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The Minority Caucus also referred to an assertion by former Deputy Finance Minister,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Cassiel Ato Forson to the effect that government had encouraged the Bank of Ghana to print an amount of GH\u00a222 billion without Parliamentary approval. <\/p>\n<p>They contended that although the Bank of Ghana denied the assertion, its admission to the use of central bank overdraft vindicates their position because it amounts to printing money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Caucus wishes to state that Central bank overdraft is the same as monetary printing in the technical sense, which BoG tried to deny earlier as per its statement dated July 26, 2022,\u201d the Minority stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read full statement of the release below:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1N1TFmHOOhXj8Sz3sCsBE7MW3BB7jcyhh\/preview\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>                <!-- Post Tags --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minority in Parliament has asked the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison to assert his independence and credibility.
