{"id":1180882,"date":"2022-08-17T07:53:01","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T07:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/17\/ug-utag-condemns-commonwealth-sarbah-hall-clash\/"},"modified":"2022-08-17T07:53:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T07:53:01","slug":"ug-utag-condemns-commonwealth-sarbah-hall-clash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/17\/ug-utag-condemns-commonwealth-sarbah-hall-clash\/","title":{"rendered":"UG-UTAG condemns Commonwealth, Sarbah Hall clash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"UG-UTAG condemns Commonwealth, Sarbah Hall clash\" title=\"UG-UTAG condemns Commonwealth, Sarbah Hall clash\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana\u00a0(UG-UTAG) has condemned the clash between residents of the Commonwealth and Sarbah Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe condemn in no uncertain terms, these needless clashes that are now threatening to get<br \/>out of control and are undermining academic peace and freedom,\u201d UG- UTAG noted in a press release dated August 16, 2022 and co-signed by Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan, President of UG-UTAG and Professor Ransford Gyampo, Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>According to UG-UTAG, it \u201cnoted with concern the recent clash between students of Commonwealth Hall and Sarbah Hall that led to several injuries and destruction of property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, \u201cWe would support Management of the University in finding a permanent solution to this<br \/>recurring problem that creates unnecessary tension in our teaching and learning environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1dAhYQFjgWdzgvOONp0eRRbhCnwBvmrJg\/preview\" allow=\"autoplay\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Management of the University has taken punitive actions with regard to the case by suspending the Hall Master and Senior Tutor of the Commonwealth Hall for their inaction that caused the clash between residents of their hall and those in Mensah Sarbah Hall.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Management, the two did not exhibit sufficient willingness and ability to hold students of the hall accountable for their actions in the recent violent clashes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese officers should, therefore, in the interim, be relieved of their duties while management works with the security services to investigate the clashes, and works towards finding lasting solutions to the tensions between students of the two halls,\u201d Management said.<\/p>\n<p>This is among other recommendations made by an investigative committee set up by the University Council.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement published on its website, the University\u2019s Management said, \u201cThe University Council, at its meeting on Thursday, 11th August, 2022, discussed the report of an investigative committee on the clashes between students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls that took place on Friday 5th August and Saturday 6th August 2022.<\/p>\n<p>However, residents of the Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana were agitated by the decision to suspend their Hall Master and Senior Tutor.<\/p>\n<p>Clad in red attires, the students converged at the forecourt of the all-male hall to demand the reinstatement of their Hall Master and Senior Tutor with immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p>They also accused the Management of taking sides in the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think the authority took a cursory look at the issue, they did not pay much attention to it.
