{"id":1179901,"date":"2022-08-16T13:13:21","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T13:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/16\/tiktok-owner-hands-algorithm-data-to-chinese-government\/"},"modified":"2022-08-16T13:13:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-16T13:13:21","slug":"tiktok-owner-hands-algorithm-data-to-chinese-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/16\/tiktok-owner-hands-algorithm-data-to-chinese-government\/","title":{"rendered":"TikTok owner hands algorithm data to chinese government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Alibaba-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Alibaba \/ Credit: GETTY IMAGES\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alibaba \/ Credit: GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Chinese internet giants including Alibaba, Tiktok-owner ByteDance and Tencent have shared details of their algorithms with China\u2019s regulators for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Algorithms decide what users see and the order they see it in \u2013 and are critical to driving the growth of social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>They are closely guarded by companies.<\/p>\n<p>In the US Meta and Alphabet have successfully argued they are trade secrets amid calls for more disclosure.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has published a list with the descriptions of 30 algorithms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO READ:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement it said that its algorithm list would be routinely updated in a bid to curb data abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Among the listed algorithms is one belonging to e-commerce website Taobao, owned by Alibaba.<\/p>\n<p>The Mandarin document said Taobao\u2019s algorithm \u201crecommends products or services to users through their digital footprint and historical search data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ByteDance\u2019s algorithm for Douyin, China\u2019s version of TikTok, is said to gauge user interests through what they click, comment on, \u201clike\u201d or \u201cdislike\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kendra Schaefer, head of tech policy research at Trivium China, said the data appeared \u201csurface level\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t look like the algorithms themselves have been submitted,\u201d she told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach one of these algorithms has been given a registration number, so the CAC can focus enforcement efforts on a particular algorithm.
