{"id":1177627,"date":"2022-08-14T14:39:14","date_gmt":"2022-08-14T14:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/14\/bawumia-joins-ga-mashie-to-celebrate-homowo\/"},"modified":"2022-08-14T14:39:14","modified_gmt":"2022-08-14T14:39:14","slug":"bawumia-joins-ga-mashie-to-celebrate-homowo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/14\/bawumia-joins-ga-mashie-to-celebrate-homowo\/","title":{"rendered":"Bawumia joins Ga Mashie to celebrate Homowo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"Bawumia joins Ga Mashie to celebrate Homowo\" title=\"Bawumia joins Ga Mashie to celebrate Homowo\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday joined the chiefs and people of Ga State (Ga Mashie) to celebrate the 2022 Ga Mashie Homowo festival.<\/p>\n<p>He paid courtesy calls on the Ga Mants\u025b, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru, the Gbese Mants\u025b, Nii Ayibontey, Sempe Mants\u025b, Nii Adote Otintor, Nii Ahene Nunoo III, Abola Mants\u025b and the Asere Mants\u025b, Nii Nikoi Olai Amashi II.<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere he went, the Vice President was received with spontaneous applause and cheers from the enthusiastic gathering. <\/p>\n<p>In a brief remark to the Sempe chief and his people, Dr. Bawumia started with the usual Homowo greetings of \u2018Afi oo afi\u2019 before explaining the purpose of his visit; to pay homage to the chiefs and people of the Ga State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a beautiful festival and our Chiefs are the custodians of our tradition and this is why on behalf of the government and our party I\u2019m here to pay homage to all the key chiefs in the Ga state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged the traditional leadership headed by the Sempe Mantse to keep up with the good initiatives being undertaken in the area, with a pledge to be a partner in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease continue to do all the things you\u2019re doing to develop the Ga state. I want to assure you that we will be by your side to support you to continue to do the good work for the Ga state\u201d, Dr. Bawumia pledged.<\/p>\n<p>He gave meaning to that pledge by making a cash donation to support the reconstruction of the Sempe Mantse\u2019s palace, and also presented assorted drinks to support the festivities.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion was also graced by the National chief Imam of Ghana Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, and some members of the Diplomatic Corps.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional priest of Sempe later prayed for the Vice President, asking God to grant his heart\u2019s desires.<\/p>\n<p>Homowo<\/p>\n<p>The Ga people celebrate Homowo which is translated as \u2018hooting at hunger\u2019 in remembrance of a devastating\u00a0famine\u00a0arising from a drought that occured in their history in precolonial Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0festival\u00a0starts in the month of August with the planting of crops (mainly\u00a0maize\u00a0and\u00a0yam) before the\u00a0rainy season\u00a0starts.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, noise making is prohibited or banned since it is believed that it will hinder the maturity of the crops.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it is a Ga traditional festival, many other ethnic groups also partake in the celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>                <!-- Post Tags --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday joined the chiefs and people of Ga State (Ga Mashie) to celebrate the 2022 Ga Mashie Homowo festival.
