{"id":1171331,"date":"2022-08-09T09:47:35","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T09:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/09\/mahama-takes-on-govt-over-recent-economic-downgrade-calls-for-national-dialogue\/"},"modified":"2022-08-09T09:47:35","modified_gmt":"2022-08-09T09:47:35","slug":"mahama-takes-on-govt-over-recent-economic-downgrade-calls-for-national-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/09\/mahama-takes-on-govt-over-recent-economic-downgrade-calls-for-national-dialogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Mahama takes on gov&#8217;t over recent economic downgrade; calls for national dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former President John Dramani Mahama wants an immediate national dialogue to tackle Ghana\u2019s worsening fiscal situation, leading to the country\u2019s economic downgrade by international rating agencies.<\/p>\n<p>He particularly blamed the Akufo-Addo government for doing too little to salvage the ailing economy and bring reprieve to suffering Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come on the heels of Standard &#038; Poor\u2019s (S&#038;P) recent downgrade of Ghana\u2019s foreign and local credit ratings from B-B\u2019 to CCC+C with a negative economic outlook.<\/p>\n<p>According to S&#038;P, the downgrade was due to intensifying financing and external pressures on the economy.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, John Mahama said, \u201cthere appears to be no end to the problems with the Ghanaian economy, with the recent downgrade to CCC+\/C junk status\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mahama said the only remedy is for a consultative discussion among relevant stakeholders to reverse what has become a worrying trend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA national dialogue on the economy, bringing some of our best brains together, will serve us well, even as we prepare for debt restructuring and negotiation of an IMF programme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the unstable currency and the recent mid-year budget review, do not repose any confidence in the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe steep depreciation of the Ghana Cedi in recent days, clearly shows that the mid-year review of the 2022 budget failed to win back the confidence of the investor community and the Ghanaian public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, no credible remedial plans have been put forward by the government to salvage the [ailing] economy\u201d, John Mahama wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FJDMahama%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02tVLuM4tV3mZ3uNfmFTj1ahbV6uFbjcSFfpFFDh3MAoFKqB4kTQzSzPudxSSEywbzl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Before S&#038;P\u2019s downgrade, Fitch had already downgraded Ghana\u2019s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to \u2018B-\u2018 from \u2018B\u2019 and handed it a negative outlook.<\/p>\n<p>Moody\u2019s Investors Service (Moody\u2019s) also downgraded Ghana\u2019s long-term issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings to Caa1 from B3 and changed the outlook to stable from negative.<\/p>\n<p>The Finance Ministry has, already, expressed disappointment at the credit rating agency\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>It says despite the impact of global external shocks on the economy, government has taken some proactive measures to revive the economy.<\/p>\n<p>It said some key revenue and expenditure measures,  the 30% cut in discretionary expenditures, have been implemented.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Have confidence \u2013 Nana Addo appeals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>But President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is confident Ghana\u2019s economy will bounce back, despite recent challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Nana Akufo-Addo said, although he admits times are difficult, the economic situation of the country will <strong>turn around shortly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, the difficulties are there, and I want to minimize the difficulties that are affecting the lives of ordinary people in a very negative way.
