It gives me a lot of hope and confidence that this project will finish within the contract duration period and I\u2019m happy with the work so far,\u201d Mr. Manu said.<\/p>\n<p>The 45-year-old Maternity Block project, started by the Acheampong regime, remained uncompleted despite several attempts by successive governments.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Mr.-Manu-being-led-to-KATH-Maternity-project-site-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"Health Minister-KATH Maternity Block www.myjoyonline.com\" class=\"wp-image-10032148801\"   title=\"Completion of new KATH Maternity Block will meet 2024 deadline - Health Minister\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Mr. Manu being led to KATH Maternity project site<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The decision by the NPP government to construct a new maternity and children\u2019s ward following several\u00a0technical, architectural and structural tests on the\u00a0old\u00a0building suggested\u00a0its structural\u00a0integrity could not be guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Weak foundations, rusty iron rods, poor quality of concrete beams, excessive corrosion of the reinforcing steels and others\u00a0raised serious concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original idea was to rehabilitate that building but we found out structurally, it was not worth completing it.<\/p>\n<p>We would\u2019ve given ourselves death trap. So the idea came that let\u2019s use the same quantum of money to do a new thing,\u201d Nana Abu-Bonsrah, the Lead Consultant for Project Consultants, Arckito Consult explained.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Ministry of Health\u00a0awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract to Brazilian , Contracta, for construction of the new block.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Health-Minister-being-briefed-by-Project-Manager-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Health Minister-KATH Maternity Block www.myjoyonline.com\" class=\"wp-image-10032148800\"   title=\"Completion of new KATH Maternity Block will meet 2024 deadline - Health Minister\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Mr. Manu being briefed by Project Manager during his visit<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Work on the new project started in February 2021 after the old block was demolished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a project that couldn\u2019t have failed us. It\u2019s right on the heart of the President and I have taken upon myself to deliver and so the President keeps on asking about how far.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the reasons why I decided to come and see it myself,\u201d Mr. Agyemang Manu added.<\/p>\n<p>The 5-storey building to be equipped with modern theatres, paediatric neurology, haematology, cardio\u00a0and respiratory wards, will provide a one-stop modern care for mothers, newborns and children.<\/p>\n<p>It will contain Paediatric Infectious Disease Unit, Mother and Baby Unit and Paediatric Renal Unit.<\/p>\n<p>Project Consultants, Arckito Consult, are optimistic of meeting the 2024 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Nana Abu-Bonsrah is the Lead Consultant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact the original thing we were expecting 750 beds\u00a0and now under phase 1, we are doing about 500 beds and then there is a phase 2 which is going to be another tower block on top of the OPD which will match with this. 2024 May, we are sure of the completion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, during the visit to the project site, expressed satisfaction on progress of work.<\/p>\n<p>He says the relocation of a nearby basic school which forms part of some additions being considered will give more space for construction of an ambulance bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are few additions we may have to do. I have asked them to cost for us to see the cost implications. We want to do a basement for a car park, linking the new block to the old facility. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to relocate the schools here.
