{"id":1168656,"date":"2022-08-06T15:10:46","date_gmt":"2022-08-06T15:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/06\/i-can-see-a-long-line-of-people-going-to-sue-if-ec-sticks-to-no-ghana-card-no-voting-kofi-bentil\/"},"modified":"2022-08-06T15:10:46","modified_gmt":"2022-08-06T15:10:46","slug":"i-can-see-a-long-line-of-people-going-to-sue-if-ec-sticks-to-no-ghana-card-no-voting-kofi-bentil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/08\/06\/i-can-see-a-long-line-of-people-going-to-sue-if-ec-sticks-to-no-ghana-card-no-voting-kofi-bentil\/","title":{"rendered":"I can see a long line of people going to sue if EC sticks to &#8216;no Ghana Card, no voting&#8217; &#8211; Kofi Bentil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-text\" style=\"line-height: 2; letter-spacing: -0.5px;font-size: 18px;\">\n<p>                        <!--p class=\"ky_saved_articles_link\"><span class=\"ky_saved_articles_hide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" class=\"ky_saved_articles_img\" alt=\"I can see a long line of people going to sue if EC sticks to 'no Ghana Card, no voting' - Kofi Bentil\" title=\"I can see a long line of people going to sue if EC sticks to 'no Ghana Card, no voting' - Kofi Bentil\"><\/span> Bookmark<\/p-->\n<p>Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its decision to use the Ghana Card as a sole requirement for identification in registering new voters for the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on <strong>JoyNews\u2019 Newsfile <\/strong>on Saturday, Mr Kofi Bentil stated that if the EC \u201cgoes along this line, we will have a massive problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This he stated is because \u201cI can see a long line of people going to sue them [EC] and I think that they will win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bentil\u2019s comments come after the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Services, warned prospective voters to obtain a Ghana Card since that will be the only requirement for registering to vote in the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview on<strong>\u00a0The Pulse<\/strong>\u00a0on Wednesday, Dr.\u00a0Bossman Asare said without a Ghana Card, one will not be registered to vote.<\/p>\n<p>This, he said is because the Ghana Card has made an impact in our society with almost 17 million Ghanaians registered for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission in collaboration with our partners took the decision that now let us have the Ghana Card as the main requirement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-myjoyonline-com wp-block-embed-myjoyonline-com\"\/>\n<p>\u201cSo what this means is that as soon as you acquire your Ghana Card with a continuous registration, you just go to our district office where you are located then you go and register and your name will be put on the roll of voters,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr. Bentil insisted that the Electoral Commission does not have the mandate to carry on with such actions. He added that the Electoral Commission\u2019s job \u201cconstitutionally given, is to facilitate for everyone who is qualified to vote. It is not to restrict so that should be clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-myjoyonline-com wp-block-embed-myjoyonline-com\"\/>\n<p>\u201cIn facilitation, they must understand that a voter ID card is not necessary, it is of voter registration and compilation as the constitution has said.
