England\u2019s Matt Walls was involved in a terrible crash in which both he and his bike flew into the crowd at track cycling\u2019s Lee Valley VeloPark.<\/p>\n
The 24-year-old Olympic champion was treated in the stands for more than half an hour before being taken to hospital for precautionary checks.<\/p>\n
Two other riders \u2013 the Isle of Man\u2019s Matt Bostock and Canada\u2019s Derek Gee \u2013 were also taken to hospital for tests.<\/p>\n
Spectators were also injured, with one taken away in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n
The rest of the session was abandoned and spectators were asked to leave while Walls was having treatment.<\/p>\n
Walls was \u201calert and talking\u201d, said a Team England spokesperson.<\/p>\n
Eight riders in total went down in the crash on the last lap of the men\u2019s scratch race qualifying, with medics and coaches rushing to help the cyclists.<\/p>\n
Walls had been trying to avoid riders who had fallen in an incident that began on the entrance to a corner. The stricken pair of New Zealander George Jackson and Australia\u2019s Josh Duffy were sliding up the banking, forcing Walls up on to the barrier and then over it.<\/p>\n
Gee also surfed the top of the barrier but managed to avoid following Walls into the stands. However, he landed heavily and needed medical treatment.<\/p>\n
A Birmingham 2022 spokesperson said: \u201cThree cyclists and two spectators have been treated by the on-site medical team.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe three cyclists have been taken to hospital. The two spectators did not require hospital treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Walls won omnium gold and madison silver for Team Great Britain at last summer\u2019s Olympic Games in Tokyo.<\/p>\n
Canadian Mathias Guillemette was disqualified from the race for causing the initial crash.<\/p>\n
