{"id":1160090,"date":"2022-07-27T13:20:06","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T13:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/07\/27\/uk-set-for-slowest-growth-of-all-richest-countries\/"},"modified":"2022-07-27T13:20:06","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T13:20:06","slug":"uk-set-for-slowest-growth-of-all-richest-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2022\/07\/27\/uk-set-for-slowest-growth-of-all-richest-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"UK set for slowest growth of all richest countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/UK-slowest-growth-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"UK slowest growth \/ Credit: GETTY IMAGES\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">UK slowest growth \/ Credit: GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK is set for the slowest growth of the G7 richest economies next year, the International Monetary Fund has warned.<\/p>\n<p>It is predicting UK growth will fall to just 0.5% in 2023, much lower than its forecast in April of 1.2%.<\/p>\n<p>The global economy has shrunk for the first time since 2020, the IMF said, hit by the Ukraine war and Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>With growth stalling in the UK, US, China and Europe, the world \u201cmay soon be teetering on the edge of a global recession\u201d, it said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/22191989129,1002554\/MGL\/mgl_ado_atunwa_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that people are feeling the impact of rising prices, caused by global economic factors, triggered by the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine,\u201d a HM Treasury spokesperson said in a statement, adding that help for households included \u00a3400 off energy bills plus personal tax cuts worth up to \u00a3330 a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IMF has cut its 2022 global growth forecast to just 3.2% and warned the slowdown risks being even more severe.<\/p>\n<p>It said fast-rising prices were to blame for much of the slowdown, with households and businesses squeezed by a combination of higher prices and higher borrowing costs as policymakers raise interest rates to try to counter inflation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe global economy, still reeling from the pandemic and Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, is facing an increasingly gloomy and uncertain outlook,\u201d economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas wrote in a blog outlining the international lending body\u2019s latest economic forecast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outlook has darkened significantly\u201d since April, the last time the IMF issued forecasts, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The global economy contracted in the three months to July, which was the first decline since the pandemic hit, the IMF said.<\/p>\n<p>The probability of a recession in the G7 economies \u2013 Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and UK \u2013 now stands at roughly 15% \u2013 nearly four times higher than usual.<\/p>\n<p>While UK growth is expected to remain relatively strong this year, Mr Gourinchas said unusually high inflation \u2013 faster than in Europe or the US \u2013 is expected to take a toll in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were to look at both years together, it\u2019s actually not very far from where the other advanced economies are,\u201d he told the BBC. \u201cThe one thing that worries me more about the UK economy is that their inflation numbers seem to be quite high.
